Pre-diabetic waiting for test results

Hi. I had gestational diabetes 10 years ago and was diagnosed pre diabetic 2 years ago. I was called for my annual check last sat and received a phone from the surgery (unplanned) this morning which I missed. I have called back and made an appointment but can't be seen until 31st August. I am thinking (fearing) I will be diabetic and concerned to wait to hear. Regardless of the outcome I am heavily overweight and have been trying slimming world with some success. I also have high blood pressure and higher than desirable cholesterol. So 2 questions if you don't mind - if I am now type 2 diebetic is waiting until 31st August to hear problematic other than for my nerves? And also given that I need to lose weight and am pre diabetic is there a healthier diet for me to be on than slimming world?

Thank you :)

Hi @fizzalfie and welcome to the forums, even though you don't really want to be here.

Well done on losing weight. Depending on how determned you are, you could tackle carbohydrates more aggressively. The body finds it quite easy to turn foods like potato, bread, pasta, rice and cereals into glucose, so cut down where you can.

The guide for carb intake for a non diabetic person is around 250g per day. We have some members consuming a mere 50g or even less. Maybe start by keeping a food diary and see what you are actually eating now?

I'm going to tag a couple of other T2's who can offer some good advice. @Rachox @JoKalsbeek @bulkbiker @Goonergal

Hi and welcome @fizzalfie

You could do a lot worse than read and follow the advice on this blog entry

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/

Weight loss is more about the type of food you eat rather than the amount so slimming world is not one I would recommend.

Blood pressure will often reduce with weight loss (did for me anyway) and most docs and nurses are woefully ignorant about new thinking on cholesterol.

Do you happen to have access to your latest blood test results?

It might be worth trying to get hold of them before your 31 August appointment so we can see just where you are on the T2 or prediabetes scale. Any idea where you were last time you were tested? Should be your HbA1c number.

A few weeks is not going to make much difference. Type 2 is slow to develop and slow to resolve. Any complications take years to develop.
I also had the problem that having panicked and gone very low carb and lost a lot of weight quickly so my third test was in the non diabetic range, that my surgery is now refusing to label me diabetic and therefore save money on annual tests. Best, IMHO, to wait and have a second test to confirm the diagnosis.
If you want to do something you could get a bg monitor and do regular tests to see what the foods you currently eat do to your bg, in other words establish establish baseline.

Just don't take those weeks as an opportunity to eat the last of all the bad things you know you will have to give up. It's not an excuse to binge. It's just a first steady step

What a kind knowledgeable bunch you are. Thank you all.
From memory i think my last HBA1C was 46. I will try and get these new results prior to the 31st appointment, good idea.

OK. I am going to come off the slimming world and go back onto the diet I was on while pregnant which in terms of carbohydrate was 30-40 grams per meal with 10-20 per snack which is hopefully not too crazy low carb for the place I am at, do think a food diary and monitoring would be helpful because I am continually in denial about just what I have eaten. I vaguely remember being surprised by what triggered a bg spike in pregnancy so I think that would be handy. Can anyone recommend a supplier for the reader, needles and strips please?

I will have a good read of that blog, thanks bulk biker :)

Thank you for the binge warning reminder Mrs A2, that is in fact exactly where my mind had gone, what do I need to enjoy in the next week and a half!

Slimming World promote potatoes, pasta & rice as syn free foods.
As you probably know these are Kryptonite to diabetics.

Actually when I think about it most attendees of Slimming World are overweight & of a certain age.
Many in the group probably suffer from hyperinsulin & have developed insulin resistance.
Their group promotes eating foods which further feeds this viscous cycle.
You couldn't make it up.
