Hi
some Info...Female, overweight, over 50 , high BP controlled by meds.
Have IBS kept fairly well controlled by cutting out a whole load of nice stuff.
As I'm at risk of type 2, I have recently started testing BG using a Glucorx Nexus
Fasting levels are consistently mid 6es. After meals varies from 7plus to 10plus. (No puddings)
So I asked for a Hb1ac test. It came back 38.
I suppose I should be relieved...but I'm having difficulty reconciling the 2 lots of results.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum, which is a good place to be!

Your finger pricks may suggest levels that would give an HbA1c of 38, but you have no idea really how long you are at these higher levels. In between tests you may well be in the 4s, and as the HbA1c is a sort of average, long periods of lows will outweigh short periods of highs.

Hi..and many thank. Good point. I have been eating a lot more sugary stuff in the last month (my excuse is hormones)...so I'm hoping that you are right.
I've read that a heavy period can reduce the reported in result.
Either way it seems...stop panicking... keep sugary stuff are treats, & keep testing to establish a pattern.
Thank you

If I were you, I would "pretend" that you were pre-diabetic for now. Reduce all sugary stuff to very little, and reduce your carbohydrate foods. All carbs turn to sugar once in the system, so they matter just as much as sugar does. The main culprits are the starchy carbs such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and breakfast cereals.

If you test immediately before a meal and then again 2 hours after first bite, any rise should be less than 2mmol/l. More than that and there is too much carbohydrate in that meal for your body to cope with. Keeping a detailed food diary will help enormously so you can see patterns emerging and learn which your personal danger foods are. Hopefully this will solve your problems and you can ask for another HbA1c in due course. :)
