Hi to all

I went to Doc yesterday and he says my asthma has kicked off and gave me predenislone for asthma attack.

I took them yesterday and it shot my bs up to 22.8 so phoned doc waiting for them to phone me bk if they do?

So what do I do I ve not had my predenislone today yet cus of above am very wheezy tired ect n used nearly a full bottle of cough med today.
Was also a breathless earlier.
I ve just spoke to Doc n he said reduce the steriods but that won't be as effective.

Prednisolone will raise blood sugars in a very high % of diabetic patients, regardless of type.

It is most usual to take them, as they are really needed, and then deal with the blood sugars. Now you know how one dose affects you, your GP will know how best to manage it. It is possible, if you're on a shortish course (<5 days,) GP may say do nothing about the levels because they return to your usual level a few days after stopping.

You should only take pred in the mornings, so best to miss dose rather than play catch-up. Hope this helps.
 
Oh Dear

I took my yesterday's dose last night cus I thought if I took it at night might not raise my bs as much as no food intake at night.

So i was wrong to do so what difference does it make

Hi, I've just joined the site and it was because I was looking for info on Steroids that I did. I'm here as my mother has diabetes, has managed her condition well with insulin for a number of years.....until last week. After speaking to her on the phone, I thought she sounded really tired, same next day. So I went down to see her. She was very dazed, confused, and couldn't cope with very simple tasks, but refusing to acknowledge that there was anything wrong.

She has recently been diagnosed with a serious liver disease and put on Prednisole tablets. She ended up in A&E that night after her sugars reached 29.

I had no idea that the steroids could have such a significant impact on her. This must have been building up for a while. I'm annoyed at myself for not realising what was going ok, for not knowing the symptoms, and more importantly, annoyed at her Liver Consultant for not mentioning the risks. It's been a scary time for all concerned, and has knocked my mum's confdence about self-medicating.

She needs to stay on the Pred's although the dose has been lowered, some different insulin pens introduced as well as other tablets. I'm monitoring her very carefully now.
 
Don't worry! It's just 'best practise' that's all, it mimics the body's natural steroids secretion most closely. The occasional mistiming will cause you no dangers. Also, you tend to have more disturbed sleep when they're taken later in the day (you?)
BG seems to be affected full stop, regardless of time of taking.
Don't continue to not eat, just your usual low carb food - prednisolone often increases appetite!

I do hope your asthma settles soon...
