Pregnancy!

I really want another baby, this would be my first pregnancy since diagnosis - when I was first diagnosed I remember my consultant warning me against getting pregnant until I was more stable and said that I would need to prepare in advance for a pregnancy by taking vitamins.. I know folic acid is one but does anyone know what else I need to take? I havent seen a consultant since I moved over a year ago but will be booking myself in with one to discuss it, just thought I could make a start on taking vitamins right now if anyone could advise me? Cheers!!

The only specific vitamin is the folic acid, but the dose recommended is higher than what you normally buy, so you need a prescription for the high dose 5mg ones. Good luck! I'm hoping to start trying later in the year so am starting to think of the prep work now!

I would see a GP to discuss what you need supplement wise and they can perhaps give you some good advice aswel as prescribing the higher dosage of Folic acid. I have a friend (type 1) who got some great advice from her GP about things to do/ avoid in pregnancy now she has diabetes. Best of luck x

Ok, it was a while back and I am sure there are more advances - but yes it's the folic acid from when you start trying and to get your HBA1c in the 6s preferably and then just to have control as good as you can. I went to an appointment with the diabetic nurse who ran through all that - also if you are on a hormonal type pill be careful coming off it, as the hormones trick your body into thinking you are pregnant so you can be a little bit more insulin resistant and when you come off you can have a period of lots of hypos as your insulin requirement drops so take care. They also always want to see you from the moment you are pregnant at my place just so they can start monitoring and helping.

Thats great thank you - I have been a bit off track recently but this decision has given me the motivation to get tighter control. Iv made a load of appointments and started revording readings and a food diary today.

I started really recording from the start of this month, I have an appointment in early April, I am trying to get closer to the targets for during pregnancy though it's hard work and I'm not quite there yet bit getting closer!

Hi :) I'm currently 22 weeks pregnant. You need to be taking folic acid daily until 12 weeks and also vitamin D daily throughout, until baby is born. My DSN recommended an HBA1C of below 7mmol before trying to conceive, but I do know others who have been higher than this and reigned in control as soon as they realised they were expecting. Good luck with everything! X

I have just discovered I am pregnant, we did plan for this year but happened early by accident. Luckily I had some 5mg folic acid in cupboard from last preg so started taking it as soon as I found out, hope that's OK (last time I took it for a month before I conceived). I am also taking pregnacare multivitamins every day. Do not know my HbA1c at the moment, not had it done for a while, but it's usually OK, will have to sort out a test this week.

A diabetic pregnancy is definitely very different to a normal one, but if you've got good health care, it should be problem free - Good luck :)

The last 3 days iv cut right down on carbs and feel like a new person!! Just had bloods done for hba1c, I knoe the result s wont be great but I am working hard to make sure the next one is miles better. Can you request another test early? E.g in 3 months rather than 6 months time? I suppose it doesn't matter too much as im testing really often anyway!

I visited the nurse at my doctors surgery to get my HBA1C checked every 3months while trying to conceive, I wanted to keep a close eye on things so I'm sure you can request the same thing too :)

Good luck! X
