Hi Pauline,
What your DN has described is the approach preferred by her GP Practice, not a "rule". Many of our members have been prescribed Byetta by their GPs without having seen a consultant. This is particularly the case where a GP has other patients already on Byetta and so feels confident about prescribing it. Other patients have had it recommended to their GP by a consultant, and some (like me) had it on prescription from a consultant for a period of time before the GP has felt comfortable about taking over the prescribing. I have had Byetta on repeat prescription from my GP for around 15 months now, but for the first 8 months my GP wouldn't prescribe it until he had seen how I fared on it. I am still the only Byetta patient in what is quite a large practice (around 14,000 population).
