Hi all

I have private medical cover through work. The policy says it covers only acute conditions and not chronic. I have had the policy for years and well before I was diagnosed with diabetes. I was thinking would there be any way the insurance company would let me see an endocrinologist through them. I rather not go through the nhs because of the delays in getting appointments and such. But as I am a diabetic I think it's very doubtful - has anyone managed to get a consultation through their insurance company for diabetes.

Hi all

I would agree with you that it would be doubtful as the consultation is just the tip of the iceberg. A Consultant would almost certainly want bloods and potentially other tests done, so suddenly the consultation has a further £xxx in tests to be considered.

If your insurance is paid for by your employer (irrespective of the P11D benefit), they may have a special arrangement - some do. I wouldn't hold your breath on that, unless you work for a massive company, or an insurance company who also do medical insurance within their company group. If you have just joined an affiliate scheme, whereby your company may receive preferential premium rates, but you, personally pay your premium by credit card or direct debit from your personal bank account, you're probably out of luck.

If you are experiencing difficulties with your diabetes which is causing you to have absences from work then I might suggest a different approach, if you are fearful of breaching your company absence/attendance policy. If you just fancy a more in-depth look "under the bonnet" of your diabetes, then I think you'll be considering putting your hand in your pocket (remembering you are unlikely to get too much valuable insight from a consultation without tests, or forgetting it.
