PROBLEMS WITH A1C

Hi there...

I have been on a MEDTRONIC insulin pump since last year. My A1C level on MDi was 6.5%...since getting the pump my A1C has risen to 7.5%. I don't feel like my sugar is as in control as it once was. Does anyone else feel the same way? Has anyone gone back to MDI after being on the pump?
HELP!

Hi,

Are you having any specific problems with the pump? if you were doing so well on MDI i'm surprised you aren't doing as well or even better with a pump.

I would say the percentage of people who return to MDI after pumping is quite low but it does happen.

Personally i was doing so awful on MDI that for me switching back would be the LAST thing on my list, but pumping isn't always an easy ride nor perfect.

I would only recommend you switch back if you really are having problems and you have exhausted all avenues or trying to gain back the control you had before, but of course unless you be more specific with your problems with the pump we can't really advise, so feel free to have a good rant and we'll see how we go :)

Hi

My son's A1C initially went up when he switched from MDI to pumping, but I believe that's because he had significantly fewer hypos on the pump, than on MDI

I've gradually become more pro-active - using the advanced features of the pump to increase or decrease temp basals, using extended boluses to cope with foods which digest slowly etc, setting different basal profiles for school days and weekends - and gradually his A1C has come back down again and his last one was the best ever. It has taken me two years to tighten up his control using the pump, but he benefitted from the freedom it gave him straight away.
