Problems with insulin.

Hi, I'm new here, trying to find out more about why I feel so poorly all the time these days, I don't feel as though my doctor & professional Diabetes nurse are listening to me.

I was made type 1 about 2 years ago and have bumbled along since then using a Lantus pen and keeping reasonably within limits. In the past few months things have changed quite a bit and I was put on Novomix 30 pens and for a while it seemed to be ok. Then I got to a point where I couldn't get my levels down under 15 and was sometimes stuck at 25. I was then changed to Humulin 30 which set off palpitations and bad sickly headaches.

I have changed back to novomix but the headaches and palp's persist.
Should this stuff be causing these reactions? I do take quite a few other tablets every day as I have a few 'conditions'

Am I alone with this?

I think many of us have been through similar times.
If your BG is stuck between 15 & 25 you won't feel well. Are you checking for ketones?
It's possible you have a bad batch of insulin - do you have new box(es) you can open. Also it could be a problem with your injection sites - try using alternative ones.
I'm not clear whether you are still using Lantus? If so it sounds as though this needs to be increased.
I think you really need to discuss this with your GP/Diabetic support team, you don't want to continue like this any longer.

you say you have other illnesses, have a read up as some meds react badly to each other which could make u feel ill, also as already said..check ketones, if u can get the gp/nurse to get u on the right insulin and levels are good and u still feel same ,some blood tests might be in order
have u had your thyroid checked?
 
Hi, thanks for the replies, I'm going to sound ignorant here but how do I check 'ketones'? what are they?

My thyroid is ok, I take thyroxin long term, my blood tests recently were ok but showed an average over 2 months of 11, not good. I am currently a lot better than I have been and it's down to around 7 - 9 fasting. During the day I have headaches that don't respond to painkillers and these wretched palpitations.
I'm using novomix 30 at the moment and I'm somewhere near right with it but the side effects are awful, I'll try another box as I have a spare. Didn't think about bad batches....

Palpitations -are you on statins?

With these concerns I would be speaking again to gp. Perhaps a different one?

No, no statins but I do take a beta blocker, tbh I'm fed up with doctors who just shrug their shoulders and say: try this or that. I know I'll have to go back but I am unusual in that I have Crohns disease too and have had a CABG 10 years ago, (Sorry, bypass op) + bad acid reflux which the doc thinks could be causing palp's. Just have lots of problems and sometimes it's good to talk....
 
Your levels are too high and thats flmore than likely from your insulin and food intake not matching. You cannot go on at these levels... You should be asking again to see GP or have a referral to a consultant.... If your GP Practice cannot sort this, then as a type 1 you should be under hospital care.
Is there a reason why you were put on to mixed insulins rather than a basal/bolus regime?

I like twice daily insulin as it is easy to comply with but does need for the insulin to be balanced up with eating the right amount of carb at the right times of the day. That can only be done through testing bg about 6 times per day and using the results to adjust the carb up or down

basal/bolus regime? What is that all about? I have no idea what this regime is, it's never been discussed or explained to me. It's the same with Ketones, I know nothing about them so today I'm going to try and educate myself online.
I can't believe I have to come to an internet forum to find this stuff out (shakes head)
I will have a lot of questions when I can get an appointment
 

Tom, to be honest, I only started to get control of this illness when I started to ignore my DSN. Her idea off success was not having hypo's, never mind that I was spending most of the day in the high teens. Now I'm not recommending you do the same, but I have found taking control, spending a long time researching, putting up with a few hypo's and very strict carb counting has made me feel a whole, whole lot better.
