Problems with Lantus Glargine?

Hi everyone

My husband has been on Lantus Glargine for long time now, a good 10 years if not more, and thinks that since he came off Humalin I & S(sp?) his HBA1C has never been lower than 10. We have been to see the Diabetic Nurse at the hospital today (who we cannot fault as she gives us good advice and can understand the trials and tribulations of the job my husband does and the shifts, and tries to help us, not lecture) and has mentioned upping the dose of the background insulin, if not splitting it. When his blood sugars are high, he has also noticed that the Lantus Glargine pushes up him up higher before it brings him down. He did mention this when he was in hospital before, but no one looked in to it further.

Has anyone else had these problems or has better control with another background insulin? We are back at the hospital again in 4 weeks, and would like some opinions.

Thanks!

The only way of knowing if the lantus is to blame for his high bg levels is to carry out some bg fasting checks, if his bg creeps up during the fast then it will be his basal insulin that's at fault and needs increasing or splitting. I can't see why lantus would push up bg before bringing it down and I think it could be purely coincidental....meaning his bg was rising anyways.... although I'm no expert so hopefully others might shed some light on this.

Alternative basal's are levemir and Insulartard, both need to be injected twice daily although some people find they get away with injecting levemir just the once.
