Problems with Quick sets positioned in leg

Hi All,

My 4 year old little girl is on a medtronic veo pump. We use quicksets. She has been on the pump for nearly a year now & we have had to change the site of the quickset from her bottom to her leg due to overuse.

Insertion of the set has been less tramatic, but the problem we have been having is that we are frequently getting blood in the cannular while wearing & not when inserted & are having to change the sets more frequently.

This is due to the set getting caught in her knickers as she pulls them up & down & also the tubing often being under tention as a result of it moving around on the belt she has around her waist, so it is often wrapped several times around her waist!!. This was never a problem on her bottom. We currently use a pouch on a belt around her waist to hold the pump.

Has anyone got any tips on how to avoid the set being pulled on when using a leg insertion site. If there a better means of carrying the pouch? Anyway, to tape the tubing so it can be removed without pain when it is necessasry to detach it ie at bath time.

look forward to hearing back

Sharon

Not sure what cannula/set you're using but the steel sets that we use come with a "pig tail" so that if the pump is pulled it is pulled against the second adhesive and not the adhesive holding the cannula in place. Whatever means of taping down the tubing you use there are adhesive removal wipes and sprays that you could use to loosen the tape before removing, this avoids pain. You can get the wipes or spray through prescription from your GP or your pump company.

Hi there, I can sympathize with the problem. My 5 year old has the same issue of blood appearing in the cannula as she too wears on leg now vs. bottom and on an active young child i guess its inevitably going to get bashed. We've found no way round this and just accept that the set needs changing every other day at best.

In terms of wearing pump, our daughter has it clipped on her vest and we have no problems with the tubing and the pump is tucked away under her clothes.
