Hope this is in the right place I am finding this forum very helpful but cant find the answer I need OK so since I last posted I have accepted that I am T2 Why it took so long I cant think now I have had a libre 2 for 3 weeks and gone low carb though I have been gradually testing common foods like potatoes and then dropping them if they cause spike I am also taking a protein meal replacement for 2 meals I have lost 10 lbs and feel much better From my before lunch test onwards the numbers are 5.4 - 5.9 However when I wake something strange happens Waking around 5.1 but by before breakfast testing they are 6.4 -6.7 and I dont understand why My post meal results have never been more than 2 above pre meal Ive tried my DN but she told me I would drive myself silly by testing and just follow the eatwell plate and the gp would decide when I need medication Any advice very welcome Sorry for saga

It’s classic dawn phenomenon, happens to everyone not just people with diabetes, (their bodies just manage it better) it’s your liver saying “oh your up and awake better get to work and give you some lovely fuel to get you going”

There isn’t really much you can do about it and it’s usually the very last number to reduce, I get similar results and I don’t even bother testing in the morning now, I find that after I’ve eaten my breakfast the rise stops and goes down as the liver realises you don’t need the fuel because you’ve eaten. In the very early days I used to keep 3 or 4 almonds beside the bed to eat before I got up, seemed to help slightly but I struggled eating them so stopped it

Sounds like you are doing everything right and things are going well for you, I wouldn’t worry too much about that one reading as like I say not much can be done about it :)

It's a common theme to be told this, accounts of people being told the same all over this forum.

They love to push their Eat Well plate to diabetics. I won't go on a rant, but carbohydrates make diabetes worse and Eat Well encourages people to eat 150g of carbohydrate per day or more. To steal an analogy I saw someone use on here - if someone is a celiac and a doctor told them to keep eating lots of gluten, would that seem right to you?

Medication is always an option and it shouldn't be dismissed in all cases, but it's worth at least exploring all the options available to you. If they're not for you, at least you're making an informed decision.

You say you've accepted you're a T2, but have you been diagnosed as such officially. What was your hba1c result?

Keep up the good work, looks like you're doing great.

You will often see this described as "foot on the floor" and as mentioned it's your liver helping you to start your day with a little shot of energy.
It's happened your whole life, you just never noticed it before

Just about creeping into the diabetes range then.

Sounds like you're making all the right moves to improve it. Medication is a matter for you to decide, in conjunction with your doctor/nurse, but when it comes to the approach you're taking in terms of monitoring your BG levels and testing foods, I don't think you'll find many around here who would say anything other than positive things - contrary to the nurse's advice. It's been an invaluable tool to me.
