How do I bolus for protein whilst on a low carb diet ..... I'm confused
I would like my BGs to be a little better and am wondering if it is the protein that is keeping my levels a bit higher than I'd like them to be but I don't know how much to bolus
My ratio is 1 unit per 10g carbs . Would I use the same ratio for 10g protein ??
Thanks

Are your levels just generally a bit high? If that's the case then maybe your basal dose needs looking at.

Or are you noticing post meal readings higher even when you've dosed correctly for carbs? Then it might be the protein. Have you tried eating just a protein meal and seeing what that does to your blood sugar without a bolus? The sort of rise you get might give you a good indication on how to bolus for protein.

I bolus for protein. I use the same ratio as for my carbs, but I manually halve it by telling my pump I'm having only 50% of the actual grams of protein that I'm eating. Then I tell my pump to extend the protein bolus over a couple of hours. Protein is probably going to raise your blood sugar slower than carbs.

It will be trial and error for you to work out how to bolus for protein.

Thanks
I think I need to do a bit more testing first . I'll try after breakfast tomorrow ( bacon and eggs) and see what happens
So if I were to have 10g protein you would suggest having 0.5 units on an extended bolus? Is that right ?x

I bolus for protein and eat vlc. If I'm eating 3 oz (20 g) I bolus for 10 carbs. If I eat more than three ounces at a time then I might need another tweak in a few hours.

Breakfast isn't always the best time to sort it out as we are most insulin resistant then but if that's going to be your breakfast most days then give it a whirl. I had to figure out each meal separately as my ratios change as the day goes on. I can eat much more protein at dinner than bf and bolus less.
