Hi guys,
I am due to get my Omnipod on Monday of next week.
I was told by my db nurse that I have to personally insure my pump and told me to get it covered for £2500.
I am absolutely fine with doing this in principle but what I am confused about is the amount she wanted me to get it covered for...

I have looked around and you can get a new PDM for no more than a £200 - £300..

What are other POD users experience regardin insurance and what they were told they had to do.

Many thanks
JB

I've recently received a letter telling me that it's my responsibility to insure my pump, this is the first time that I've been told this & I've had my pump for over 2 years.

A new pump at "start up" costs between £2,500 & £3,000, so I guess that's why they say that much.

However, you are not legally obliged to insure the pump. It is for you to decide. Your home insurance policy may cover it, it's worth checking. Yes, pump insurance will probably replace it mire quickly & covers accidental damage which you home policy may not, but if you are content to go back to MDI while the claim is sorted & make up any shortfall in payout from your own pocket, you can choose how/if you insure.

Personally, I consider the pump policy on offer (£6.99 per month I have just been quoted), unacceptably high for a fairly low value item (in the grand scheme of things) & where I consider the risk of loss/theft to be low. My home buildings insurance policy is only £25 per month for £150,000 cover. This is my test of value for money.

I shall accept the risk personally & cough up for a new one from my own funds should the worst happen. Of course, I know that I can afford to do this, if you can't, £6.99 a month may be worth the peace of mind that it brings.

It's important to note though, that I'm not advocating not insuring your pump, just expressing my opinion of it as it applies to me.

I threw mine onto the house insurance and, although I had to add it as a named item, it didn't up the price of my policy by much at all.

Many thanks for your replies...
***UPDATE*** I spoke to the db nurse again (The same one who told me £2500) and she now tells me a new PDM(Omnipod) will only cost £300.
I discussed Warrenty etc but she had no specific answers so told me to direct them to the Omnipod rep who will be present at my "Fitting" on Monday!
