My 12 yrs. old son is on insulin pump.Can someone educate me about how much should be the basal rate and on what basis we calculate it.

Get the book called Pumping Insulin by Walsh. This will explain about basal rates and loads of other stuff too.
Ideally, yr son should be receiving care through a hospital consultant with guidance on using a pump through a diabetes nurse.

Im living in India and my son is being looked after by expert doctors in this feild but for that i need to travel a long distance which requires lot of time and therefore,consumes lot of time at the cost of my sons schooling.

I understand your problem but no one on a website forum can give you any help regarding setting the basal rates correctly as everyone needs a different level. Make sure thst you have a blood glucose meter and plenty of blood glucose teststrips as you will need them so that you can get the settings correct. Get the book and have a good read and if necessary contact the insulin pump company for help.

It is thought that most diabetics who start using a pump will need about 30% less insulin on their starting basal rates than using the basal insulin and bolus insulin added together on a daily amount. This is very very basic though and often basal rates need to be adjusted according to blood glucose tests.
