Scientists have developed purple tomatoes which they hope may be able to keep cancer at bay. The fruit are rich in an antioxidant pigment called anthocyanin which is thought to have anti-cancer properties.

A team from the John Innes Centre, Norwich, created the tomatoes by incorporating genes from the snapdragon flower, which is high in anthocyanin. The study, published in Nature Biotechnology, found mice who ate the tomatoes lived longer.

Anthocyanins, found in particularly high levels in berries such as blackberry, cranberry and chokeberry, have been shown to help significantly slow the growth of colon cancer cells. They are also thought to offer protection against cardiovascular disease and age-related degenerative diseases.

There is also evidence that the pigments have anti-inflammatory properties, help boost eyesight, and may help stave off obesity and diabetes. 8)

I thought purple tomatoes, bred by selection, already exist. loads of colours do

In New Zealand the motto isn't five a day it's five colours a day. Many bioflavinoids are coloured pigments and all have various benefits. I can never remember the names as to which one is which but the pink colour in salmon and prawns, the blue in blueberries and the orange red and yellow pigments in peppers and concealed in some greens and green herbs all have different benefits, oh and also dark chocolate and red wine

has been extolling their virtues for years, it's nice to see science catching up with him <G>

anthocyanins are massively available in red wines and often used as natural food and beverage colours - so if you like your red wine and not so much the tomatoes - go ahve a glass - that's why the french (notable drinkers of hardy reds) seem to have healthier lives than others!

Agreed (just finished the Bordeaux and started some disappointingly mediocra Rioja)

A lot of the work Quentin has studied involved things like the "Mediterranean Paradox", and the diets of particularly long lived populations such as on certain Greek islands and parts of Japan. Some of his philosophy involves eating small quantities of many different things all of which have benefits. Of course if you massively drop your usage of nutritionally poor carbs you have much more opportunity to do this.

Cant drink alcohol at all

Will have to do pretty colourered fruit veg etc instead
