Can I have some advice
I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic six months ago following a fasting blood test and glucose tolerance test. My Hba1c was normal at 40 but the final reading after the GTT (HORRIBLE)was still 11.8.
The nurse said no need for medication as it can be controlled by lifestyle so have cut out large portions of foods, ice cream , sugar, fizzy drinks, beer and biscuits snacks etc. My weight is now 11st 8 lbs with a height of 5ft 10 ins and I have lost a stone in around 6 months.
As the Hba1c was normal but the GTT raised could the xmas activities and my fatty indulgences have led to the diagnosis??
I feel so fit and well now and was told no need for Metiform or drugs.
What do others think about this reversal of type 2 through lifestyle change.??
Some friends I know have just said oh well and gone on drugs but I want to fight this!!!

but I want to fight this!!!
Great news.. so firstly hello and welcome

I'll point you to a great introductory piece detailing how a lot of us do what you are attempting (and will probably succeed with)

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.26870/

My I ask where in the world you are located? It's quite unusual here in the UK to get an OGTT for diagnosis and your HbA1c level of 40mmol/m would not be considered even pre-diabetic here..

Hi and welcome,

Whatever the diagnosis, it seems your body is showing an intolerance to carbs - sugar is only one type of carb, so my advice is to keep on fighting and not relax into complacency. Your HbA1c is only just normal, and as it is a sort of average of the previous 2 to 3 months it could be taken as a warning to you. You didn't say what your fasting glucose was - was it above 7mmol/l?

My HbA1c on diagnosis in 2014 was 53. I was sent away without any medication, just advice about lifestyle changes. I have never needed drugs in all these 5+ years. There are many of us in this position on this forum, and many others that began with drugs and then came off them. Some T2s have been able to come off insulin injections.

Have a good read round and ask as many questions as you like.

Thanks for all the feedback.
Just been for my 1st 6 month checkup and Dr says fasting level now 6.5 so back to pre diabetic levels and no need for any visit to the diabetic nurse. I have lost a stone and down to 11st 7lbs on height 5ft 10 ins so he pleased. my HBa1c is down from 40 to 36mm so also better.
To sum up I seem to have reverted back to pre diabetic and am just eating a sensible diet. If I indulge in something rich like cheesecake now and again, OK but it CANNOT be a regular thing. Sugar, ice cream, chocolate ,gateaux all gone as a regular thing!! Feeling good.
What do others think of 6.5 plasma fasting glucose and 36 mmo/l HBa1c ?? Back at Xmas it was 40??
Can you go back to Pre diabetes ?????
Thanks

Prediabetes in the UK is considered an HbA1c of between 42 and 47 mmol/m
Yours have been 40 and 36 mmol/m which are fairly "normal" so you have never had pre diabetes.
Obviously cutting out the sugary, starchy foods has had an impact on your blood sugar levels so well done on your results.
If you carry on as you are you should be fine.

Yes you can go back to prediabetic, same as you can return to diabetic if having been there previously. If there is an underlying metabolic issue that makes you susceptible to the effects of carbs it’s pretty much always there. Keep on top of diet, especially carb items and you can remain below diagnostic levels. Well done on your improvements.

Thanks for the great comments from you all!!
Its odd that you can be in remission based on my HBa1c Of 40 at Xmas but now 36 yet still have impaired fasting glycaemia at 6.5 ( above high ref limit).
I understand from you that my HBa1c of 36 isn't pre diabetic but the phrase "Impaired fasting glycaemia is recognised as PRE- DIABETIC?? Perhaps the HBa1c result is more important as a long term result and the effect on the body
My GP says all results are fine but I was booked 6 months ago on a clinic course for type 2 diabetes. Does that mean I don't now have to attend as got the all clear!!
Comments would be great as I am new to all this..
