Query re. Type II diabetic now having to inject insulin

Hello

I have just joined the forum as my elderly father (age: 80) has type II diabetes. I have just heard that he has started to inject insulin having previously managed his condition via medication and diet. I am worried that this signals a worsening of his diabetes, is this necessarily so? He has had type II for 20-25 years and in my opinion isn't as good as he could be in controlling his diet. However, he has recently been unwell with symptoms suggesting that he is not tolerating the medication regime he is on (liver function tests indicate this) so I also wondered whether this decision to change to insulin is likely to be in response to that rather than that his condition per se has worsened, i.e. an alternative option for management.

I am worried and cannot always get sufficient explanations from him as doesn't always ask questions and if he does can have trouble remembering what he is told.

Many thanks,

Sam

Sometimes insulin is the only option and safer than big doses of some of the other medicines. If he really wants to and is motivated and still has beta cell function, it might just be temporary, whilst he's recovering from illness.

Sam, is it possible for you to see your dads GP with him? Some practices will encourage this when the patient is elderly, or like me very forgetful . Perhaps a tactful approach to your Dad suggesting you popped along on his next visit could do the trick, and you can gain some info. If distance makes this impossible I think I would be inclined to contact the GP myself. While confidentially is important there are times when it can be "adapted " for the good of all concerned!
