Hello everyone.

Over the last month I've felt certain symptoms that may or may not be related to diabetes, so today I went to my doctor and had a blood test done. I do not remember the exact value, but she told me that my blood glucose over the past 3 months were at good levels, but my current blood sugar (at time of test) was 7.1.

My last meal before that test was at 5:15 in the morning. After that I had a night of tossing and turning, eventually getting around 3 hours of sleep and waking up 1 hour before my test at 15:00 in the Afternoon. So roughly 10 hours after my last meal. I also had to sprint to make it in time, but not sure if that has any bearing on the levels?

She didn't suspect me of diabetes, but I've read that above 7 after so many hours post meal is a sign of diabetes. Basically I'm just looking for some different views here as I'm a bit paranoid (by nature, I might add)..

Hopefully I posted in the right place and you guys can provide me with your expertise.

Thanks.

You really need to get the result of your 3months test this is the most important one .The 7.1test could be due to your liver dumping glucose into your system because you hadn't eaten for a while and your liver thought that you were starving !

Without knowing the level of your HbA1c (the past 3 month test) then it's going to be hard for anyone to say.. your 7.1 could be because of stress, rushing around, and lack of sleep.. I think all or any of those would send my blood sugar up. Any chance you could contact your surgery and ask them for the actual figures of your HbA1c.
I'm afraid that "good" levels can be anything depending n your GP so the exact figure would be far more useful.

Thanks for the answers. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the value for the 3-month test was at 39 or 40.

Anyway, your answers calmed my paranoia a bit. I'll be going back for another another check in a week just to make sure I'm not diabetic.

Was your nurse aware that you were fasting i.e. no food or drink other than water for 10 hours prior to the test? This would mean that diabetes can be diagnosed from symptoms + plasma glucose equal or greater than 7.0 mmol/l (or 6.1 mmol/l in whole blood)? For most people a 3 pm sample would be a random sample which means that diabetes wouldn't be diagnosed until the plasma glucose is equal or greater than 11.1 mmol/l + symptoms.

Yes, I told her that my last meal was at 5 in the morning. However, I forgot to tell her about any stress, lack of sleep, and so forth.
