Question about postprandial glucose level

Hi,

I have not been diagnosed with diabetes but due to some symptoms (primarily extreme unquenchable thirst) I bought a test kit hoping to rule diabetes out. Unfortunately I have been coming in at the pre-diabetes glucose levels according to this site. Given my age though it seems unlikely I would get diabetes now so i'm still thinking there could be another explanation. My levels go much higher about an hour after eating though and what I cannot figure out , and I have googled it to death, is it ok for your blood glucose to go high after eating providing it comes back down by the 2 hour mark? Or is it supposed to stay under a certain amount for the whole two hours? because all the information always says "2 hours after eating" and I cant work out what they should be within those two hours.

Thank you for any information you can provide,
Rachael

Take a reading before your first bite. Take a reading two hours after your first bite. Hopefully the difference between the two numbers is 2 or less. However it's only a guide and can depend upon what you have eaten.

Hello @Rshepherd , and welcome to the forum!
May I ask what kind of 'high' we're talking?

With unquenchable thirst I'd see your GP anyway, regardless of what the numbers are.
Good luck!

Non diabetics will have a rise in blood sugar after eating but it will will return to normal after 2 hours. How big that rise is will depend on the individual and what they ate, maybe 7 at peak, just to give a example ballpark figure.
What did you mean about your age? Typically Type 1 is diagnosed early before age 20 and Type 2 in middle age and later but either type can be diagnosed at any age.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. It goes up to 10.something usually about an hour after I have eaten, say, a sandwich. I think from what I am reading here though its fine for there to be a spike under two hours after eating so on that count im probably ok! After two hours its usually 7.8 or less which seems to be in the normal range for.

My fasting reading first thing in the morning is over the "normal" range but I think there must be some wiggle room for everyone being a bit different...but yes you are quite right I should just ask a doctor!

So simple! thanks for that.

True in fact my uncle was diagnosed with type 1 when he was 28. I was just thinking statistically it is less likely! Thanks.

Why not visit your GP, tell them about your symptoms and ask for a hba1c test?
10.something after food isn't diagnostic for diabetes but close to it. In combination with your symptoms I'd want a doctors test, not a DIY approach.
