Question about testing

Hi all

Have just started testing after having a long break from it (doc wont give me strips, so bought my own, finally), my numbers have been really good (4 days into testing) so far nothing above 6.1, question is - i had a coffee (with milk) about an hour after my tea and i tested about 45 mins after that and i had gone up to 7.1, should i be saving my hot drink until after i have done my 2 hour test?

I'd say no. I completely ignore tea and coffee including the small amount of carbs from the milk. Coffee and tea never seem to effect my BG's at all but where we have discussed this before I think others have found they can.
 
I don't have anything to eat or drink after eating if I am doing a 2-hour test until after I pricked my finger for the reading.
 
Sorry xyzzy - I find it does have an effect. According to how much milk you have, there are carbs, but it seems that strong coffee also raises BGs as it increases insulin resistance. Green tea, on the other hand, although it contains caffeine, reduces insulin resistance. Weird uh? Does seem that coffee affects my 2 hours though. Answer is to try it both ways and see!
 
There told you others would disagree. Actually I quite enjoy a mug of hot chocolate in the evening and I won't have that until the two hours are up. Coffee increases insulin resistance well you live and learn. I also expect it depends on how strong you have your tea and coffee and what kind of milk as full fat milk is less carbs than semi skimmed. As Grazer says the easiest way is to try things out and see the results.
 
Does coffee increase insulin resistance even if it is decaf? I take decaf with unsweetened soya milk and I do not think that it affects me that much.
 
I drink decaffeinated tea and coffee at home and it has never had any effect on my readings but yesterday I made the mistake of having a normal coffee.

I had done my +2 at 9:00am and recorded 5.2 and then went on a leisurely plant shopping expedition. At 11:00am I bought a mug of coffee to warm me up, hardly any milk and no sugar. Got home and did my normal pre-lunch reading at 12:30pm and it was 6.5 <gulp> dismissed that as a faulty strip and retested ..... it was 6.6. +2, after a couple of slices of home cooked chicken, it was down to 4.9. I won't be using caffeinated coffee again in a hurry!
 
To clarify and confirm, it's only strongish caffeinated coffee that increases insulin resistance, and normal green tea, despite the caffeine content, was shown to reduce it.
