I attended a charity lunch today and overdid my food intake a bit.

I had forgotten to take a pre lunch reading, but my pre meal levels have been around 5 mmol/l recently.

I took a reading 2 hours after the meal (4pm) and found it had spiked up to 9.1

I checked again at 8 pm and the level was 5.1. This followed a chicken sandwich and some ham at 6 pm.

So is this sort of spiking and return to normal within 3 or 4 hours a normal reaction to a spike for a type 2 who is on metformin?

Thanks.

Your profile and the script under your avatar says you don't have diabetes. If you do, and are on Metformin, this needs amending as it will confuse people that respond.

As @bulkbiker said, the answer to your question depends on what you had for lunch.

It will definitely depend on what you eat and how your body can handle different types, and sometimes quantities, of food.

Some foods/combinations (usually low carb, fattier ones) can give me a smoother, sometimes longer, "hump" rather than a possibly shorter term, high sharper sugary starchy spike. What I don't want is high and long... So I aim to eat things that give me a low rise returning me to (close to) pre meal levels in around 2 hours. The less work and stress I put on my pancreas the better.

So be aware that you can to a certain extent and with the right diet control how you might spike, and use that knowledge to manage/control your diabetes.
