Quitting smoking

I quit smoking on the 29th of January... I quit for two months and then started having one here and there and then I'd buy the odd ten packet and when I was diagnosed with diabetes last Wednesday I started back up again and was soon back up to 40 a day.

I've quit smoking again today. I've got my patch on and my nicotine quit mouth spray. I'm already gagging for a cig and I've only been awake an hour. I'm going to do it this time as I know how good I felt the last time I gave up (well after the first month anyway)...

The positive thing about quitting and then staring again is that I've learnt from my mistakes. The first time a quit I started again a month later so I knew the next time I had to watch myself at the 1 month mark. The next time I gave up for two months and this time I learnt that giving up was much easier in month two and also not to even smoke 1 cig as I might end up smoking again.

So today is day 1 of quitting smoking.

Does anyone else want to share their experiences of quitting smoking?

It's tough - but do-able. I gave up many years ago, 13 December, and never looked back. That was it I just stopped from 20or so per day.

Late onset T1, several auto immune issues.
Humalogmix25 twice a day, Methotrexate 25mg once per week, FolicAcid 5mg once per week, prednisolone 5mg daily, Allopurinol 300mg, Calcichew-D3 800iu, Levothyroxine 50mcg, Atenolol 50mg, Losarten 100mg, Aspirin 75mg, Nicorandil 20mg, Nitrolingual GTN spray, Metformin 2000mg, Allimemazine 10mg, Lanzoprazole 30mg, Atorvastatin 20mg, Co Codamol 8/500mg, Depo Medrone (Methylprednisolone) or double Prednisolone for 7 days in case of RA flare.

I tried various methods, filters, patches etc. and never really succeeded in stopping my 50-60 a day habit, for many years.
One day (About 20years ago) I had a coughing spell and almost passed out as I could not get my breath back.
I then vowed I was giving up smoking there and then and would never put a smoke in my mouth again.
I broke up and threw all my cigarettes away.
My wife tells me I was hell to live with for about 3 months ?
I have never smoked again.
I believe that if you really believe you want to give up its possible. Each day becomes a target of how many days you have stopped
Good Luck, Let us know how it goes

Emmy-Lou, may I wish you the very best with this.

My husband had one heck of a scare from an excellent Vascular Surgeon to whom he was referred approx. 6 years ago with intermittent claudication. He was faced with the promise of one, if not 2, leg amputations if he did not quit smoking immediately. After finishing his current pack of Golden Virginia and with the help of a Nicorette inhalator, he has not smoked since. I honestly thought this would be impossible for someone who had started at the age of 11 and was consuming half an ounce of tobacco daily. I am extremely proud of him.

You've got the insight, the determination and the resources. You will do well, and please let us know it is going. Very, very good decision.

I've given up today too. I'm using patches an inhalator and an e-cig. I am determined this time.

I gave up 7 years ago (had smoked 40/day for 35 years) with hypnotherapy and patches. I had tried before but failed.

Determination
is what made the difference. I was fed up of not being able to control my habit.

Hope it works for you this time.

Hey that's cool... We'll have to check in with each other. I've got an inhaler as well but will use patches and mouth spray mainly.
I've had more cravings since my last post but they don't last very long and when I get a craving I know it's time for a spray.

My cravings aren't too bad and they really do go as quickly as they come got my 1st hurdle in a bit though. Going to a barbecue where most of the people smoke. So I will take my e cig
Definitely keep each other going. Have u got that NHS smoking app? It's good it calculates how much u r saving. X

Good idea to take the ecig... It's hard when others are smoking... Luckily most people I'm around don't smoke so that should make it easier... I've got one app... It tells me how much I've saved and shows graphs and other things... It's basic but was free.

I started on an E Cig back in Jan 2011 when I was diagnosed with Emphasyma. After losing my Dad,Uncle, Sister and partner from Emhasyma (none of the gave up smoking) I knew I was on a slippery slope if I carried on with the rollies. But I always enjoyed smoking and the E Cig seemed to be the answer.
Just over 3 years on and I am still on my E Cig. I have learned a lot and have a great device and mix my own nicotine juice so the costs stay low. I don't think I could have done it without my E Cig as I have zero will power....

That is brilliant that you've managed to quit with an ecig and for so long... I hope that your emphysema is doing better because of it. I myself thought I had zero willpower but I reckon we both must have some to be able to leave the cigs behind as for me I do love smoking. But I find you really do get used to not having them after a month or so.

I gave up 8 years ago. I was a 40 a day hag.

For one solid week of self prescribed rehab, I used an inhalator, took lots of vitamin c, had a steam sauna each day and fell asleep listening to Paul McKenna every night. That did the trick.

Good luck Emmy-Lou

I gave up in October 2013. I used my last fag paper about 10pm and I just didn't buy anymore the next day. I never planned to give up, and I never wanted a fag again. I honestly from day 1 felt like a non smoker and like I had never smoked in my life. I don't know how if happened, I literally just woke up and never thought about smoking again.

A month later I got type 1 diabetes, go figure. At least I didn't have to deal with quitting with the stress of diagnosis I guess I count myself very lucky to have just stopped. I had been smoking for about 10 years.

I got diagnosed 2 months after I quit... I started having symptoms of diabetes (thirst and blurred vision) a couple of weeks after I quit. I know it is extremely unlikely but I had wondered if the two things had something to do with each other.

Well done Emmy-Lou, you can do it! I went from at least 20 a day (which I'd been doing for 30 years) to 0 overnight and with no substitute either. I've found it incredibly easy, I've had no cravings or mood swings and I didn't want to stop either.

I read "Stop Smoking The Easy Way" by Allen Carr, it explains why you smoke and what happens when you stop (you don't quit or give up by the way, you stop!), I would thoroughly recommend it, best tenner I've ever spent.
