Could you possibly be coming down with something? Sickness can raise your BG levels?Hi, i am on a very low carb high fat diet. My blood sugars are normally really good but the past few days they seem to be raising by themselves!
Tbh it is really depressing. I will only eat a salad in 24 hours, and my bloods will be in the 5s all day but now it is rising without food into the 6s and yesterday spent the day in the 8s without food and stayed there steadily for 2 hours!!!
What does this mean? Does it mean that even on a very low carb diet that i still need medication?
3am 5.4, 9.50 bf 6.8 (natural yogurt (non fasting day)), 11:43 af 8.7, 12:43 8.2, 13:40 7.7, 15:41 7.2, 17:32 5.8, 21:20 af 7.0 but then at 21:36 it was 5.2, 23:17 5.2 (dinner salmon, asparagus and home made hollondaise sauce no lemon juice)
( bf= before food af= after food)
If any one can tell me what is happening with my body would be appreciated, this is not normal but it is going up, today 9:44 bf 5.1, 13:06 6.9, then at 14:20 6.0.
(Compaired to last week before and after food was in the 5s then a few days ago before was in the 5s and after was in the 6s)
Most diabetics need to eat every 5-6 hours latest. When we do not eat, our liver kicks in to make sugars for us. It will make too much and we will see those types of elevated numbers. Trying sticking to your low carb diet, but eating a little bit more often. If you are still finding bad readings, perhaps up your carb count a little bit and seeing where your own personal cutoff is. There is no one diet that will work well for everyone.
I low carb too, but not to the point of a LCHF diet. I do not follow the guidelines set out by my diabetic team, who want me to take in 45 carbs a meal. I find, while still within the medcial guidelines of that 7-10 at post meal sugar checks, I do not personally like sitting with readings in the 7s or 8s, putting that extra strain on my organs. Typically, I take in about 25-30 carbs per meal and manage to stay in that 4-6 range for fastings and post meals.
I am on another site and there is a lot of people there who adhere to a LCHF diet, but still require meds. Personally, I think it is because some people are not taking in enough carbs and they would find better results by upping it *slightly*.
Most of all, I think it is really important for you to eat at scheduled times. At least 3 meals a day, spaced no more than that 5-6 hours apart, plus a small bedtime snack.
Good luck and hope you find lowered numbers soon.
Thanks for reply, my body doesnt cope with carbs... i have been on the diet for for 3 months and only just finding this problem... i was worried there may be a problem with the accu-chek i have as i can get a difference in readings from the same drop of blood ( 7.0 then re-test and it be in the 5s or even 4s) if i eat sweet potato i can go up to the 8s-9s and then struggle to come down again! Most diabetics need to eat every 5-6 hours latest. Thanks... i have no idea where the hclf in the title came from! Can I assume that there is a typo in the thread title? It says HCLF (i.e. high carb low fat) but the discussion is on LCHF.
I found that I too have had a slow rise in bgl even though I am doing much the same as I was normally doing. No change in meds, and no reason for liver dump. in my case it was not any jump, just a gradual rise which is not a symptom of liver dump.
I have solved my problem by taking a herbal supplement at low dose, and my levels have come back down. i am now averaging 5.4 mmol/L (down from 6.5 last week).
I think others have reported similar problem, but that may have been weight rising. My weight is currently static at 66.7 kg for this last week.
Not liver dumps as those are quite small now... they got smaller as the days progressed. This is more a very steady increase, but looks like it is decreasing again! Stress can I think cause higher bloods too so if you are feeling better then keep up your regime.. sounds like it was working ok beforehand.. Also I find that fasting helps a lot to bring my levels down. I have done a few 2-4 day fasts and have had my best results at the end of them. Not liver dumps as those are quite small now... they got smaller as the days progressed. Thanks. The thread title has been corrected for you @busydiabeticmum
I do 5 fasts or 6 in a row depending what i have on at the weekend. I thought it may also help to break the plateu that i keep hitting.Stress can I think cause higher bloods too so if you are feeling better then keep up your regime.. sounds like it was working ok beforehand.. Lol. I am inside with the fans on! Yesterday i was out! The heat does make me feel ill, however today is hotter than yesterday and bloods are lower! Plus yesterday and today i wasnt fasting which meant i was drinking and could hydrate! (My fast is religious which means no food or drink between sun rise and sun set (3am and about 9:15pm however changes everyday)It could be the weather having turned a bit warmer? Many find their numbers go up a bit. My (personal) theory is it could, in some cases be due to hydration levels dropping a little because of the heat.
I don't find this myself, but I am always manic about remaining hydrated.
I have also been fasting for nearly 2 months, though not allowed to fast while i am menstruating so take off a week for that, however i can definitely see a drop in the basal as i was in the 3s and 4s when i started to fast and now in the 5s to 6s, it is logical that as you dont need as much you wont produce as much, however i see it as giving the beta cells a rest by not needing to produce as much they will be able to replenish the dead beta cells and have time to create a store for the 1st secretion of insulin for a meal, so i have seen my body is coping better with carbs now than before (i am able to eat some and not sky rocket and my bg return to normal within non diabetic time frame).I would be thinking it is the heat and the stress. Or sickening for a virus, or something...
My experience of intermittent fasting is that it lowers 'baseline' bg and reduces glycogen stores beautifully, so i would be very surprised if missing meals would cause your recent rise, especially as you have been eating IF for months.
Hope that helps.
