Sorry if this is a daft question but I've been unable to find the answer online and I can't speak to the diabetes team outside of regular appointments unless it's an emergency. I've been given the slow release Metformin as the standard one was giving me upset stomach issues. At the moment I've been taking one with dinner, but I need to gradually increase the dose. My question is, do I take the second one in the morning with breakfast, or take both with dinner in the evening? Or does it not matter? TIA

No daft question @Mousey123 - unfortunately we can’t really advise on when and how you take medication on the forum. I’ve no experience of slow release Metformin but hopefully someone will be along to share their experience.

In your shoes I would consider not understanding when I need to take my meds would be an “emergency” - can you speak to your GP or perhaps the pharmacist who dispensed your meds to see what they say. I usually find chatting to a pharmacist can be a good call as they have can be more knowledgeable and drugs & meds.

I agree with @lovinglife , my first port of call would be the pharmacist. BTW no question is daft if you don’t know the answer

Thank you. Unfortunately I've already tried the "not understanding" approach once so I don't think it will wash a second time! I will try speaking to the GP next week, they are pretty good with stuff like this. I'm just impatient haha

I’ve had a quick google round for you and though I’m not directly advising you the advice seems to be you can take slow release Metformin once a day - but I would double check this with your pharmacist- link below from Gateshead NHS website.

I take slow release Metformin and have for so many years after asking to change. I take 2 tablets with evening meal. So you can take both at same time as i asked my GP was that safe and he laughed and said he would not give it this way if it was not. x

Every one I know on it takes it at the same time

Drugs like metformin that affect the body slowly over time have no benefit in splitting the dose

Rapid acting meds of meds that only act for a limited time period can benefit from being split dose
