Hi

Sorry another Rapid-D link question.

We are new to the Rapid-D link and I wanted to check whether is it okay for my daughter to have a bath/swim with the 'pony tail' part of the tubing left just as it is when disconnected from the pump?

Thanks

Jo

Does the Rapid-D come with a protective cap so that you can cap off the end of the pony tail? We use the Animas equivalent and it comes with two caps. One caps off the pony tail and the other caps off the end of the infusion tubing that is attached to the pump. It is important to cap off the pony tail otherwise you'll get water going into that tubing and dilute the insulin. Also best to use both caps to keep bacteria and other unwanted germs out.

No I don't think the Rapid-D does come with a protective cap, unless it is something I need to order separately? I looked at the cannula package and the tubing package and couldn't see anything, I could open it but didn't want to waste it.

Hi

There are some blue rubber protective caps for the Rapid D but these need to be asked for unfortunately as they are not included with the sets. They are and they are not needed though. I tend to use one when I disconnect to have a shower as I dont fancy getting soap suds in the connector but Accu chek say that loads of people dont bother, so it's optional.

I have about 20 of them so if you would like a few, send me a PM and I'll pop them in the post. They can be re-used over and over again.

We ordered some before we went on holiday as we didn't want sand and sea water getting in. We used them while on holiday and they were very effective, however sincw getting back we have not used them and Lily has been swimming and has showers and baths with no problem.
I think it is a good idea to have some in though, just in case.

The Animas Rep gave us a couple of caps for mine last week, but said they were not needed to keep water out. Only thing they would be useful for is the likes of sand or mud getting in the plastic and blocking the two bits from clipping back together.

You wont get sand, soap or water actually making it in the tubing.

That's interesting, we were told the cap was important to keep water out. It's a habit now for us that when Jess baths or swims we pop the cap on, it's not any bother really so we'll keep doing it. The Animas tubing comes with a spare cap in each new set so we have loads of them, I keep one in Jess' test meter kit so it's always to hand when we need to unplug for swimming.

It won't do any harm putting the cap on, but I'm inclined to think it is perfectly safe without as the rep claimed. Mostly down to the fact that the tubing sets are approved for use by incompetent people like ourselves. If there was some risk of things getting in the tubing then we would need to qualify as nurses before they would give us the pumps.
