Hi I’m looking for a answer to a question. How would I go about finding my insulin to carb ratio without upsetting my levels. I currently am 1:5 morning, 1:6 lunch time, 1:9 dinner . Now I am looking for evening around 10.30pm, I used to be 1:10 and don’t cover 20g of carbs would take me to where I wanted to be. How would i go about working this out.

I'd start with using your usual ratio for a few days and meticulously counting carbs and recording levels.
That should tell you if you need to tweak your ratio up or down a bit, assuming your basal keeps you more or less level.

Do you use pens or pump?
If you use pens and need small amounts of insulin, it may be worth looking into a pen that can deliver half units.

for me it was a case of try it if it didn’t work adjust and try again , once you find your levels are acceptable stick with it , but be prepared to change as levels do sometimes change , dont worry if bs are out of sync for a bit , you will find what works for you , and that’s what diabetes is all about finding what works for you , I’ve had diabetes over 40 years and every day is still a school day

Thanks everyone I use novo rapid pen I seem to have lost a bit of weight so I now feel my ratios have changed I use a lot less insulin at night than in the morning. Does anyone else think they use less at night ?

If you've lost weight, maybe start by checking your basal first.
What time do you eat your evening meal?
If you can take 20g of carbs and not need any insulin, it sounds as if either your basal rate or evening meal ratio is out.

I need way more insulin for the same amount of carbs (and even the exact same food) in the morning than I do at night.
And that is not counting the fast acting (bolus) insulin I take just for getting out of bed.

I’ve dropped my basal by 2 units seems to be holding me steady now, noticed a difference in just 2 days. I ate 15g of carbs last night it put me up by 3mmols.

My evening meal is usually around 5pm however I always have a supper around 9/10.

My morning insulin ratio is far higher than what I need for dinner. For dinner, with the same amount of net carbs, I can often get away without having insulin at all. I don't know why but for breakfast I need something along the lines of 5 times more insulin. I thought at first that it was the milk but I experimented with having milk at dinner time and my BGL didn't respond the same

I’m 8units for 40 carbs in morning, 4 for 40g carbs around 6/7pm and experimenting this hour 11pm . Just tried 1.15 ratio for tonight and kept the carbs low so no risk of hypo or hyper. Hopefully all goes well and brings me back to normal level. What is your bedtime reading. I normally go to sleep with my level around 8 and wake up around 8. Is this too high?
