Hoping for some help here. I am currently re-applying for my driving licence. Just the normal 3 yearly renewal. No issues.

Can Someone tell me if I have to send my current licence with the completed forms. Not very keen to be without my driving licence and I know it can take some time till I get my new licence.

Thanks in advance

If you have no other issues, you can apply online and do not need to send anything.
My driving license was renewed last year. I renewed online and had my replacement within a week.

You may be able to apply online

If you send the paper forms in the section that states about sending you old license it typically states you don’t need to send it if you need it

So no you don’t need to send the old one

Same here, couldn't believe how quick it was sent, it must have been just days before the new one dropped through the letterbox.

Thanks for your prompt replies. I was told I could not apply online. I have several issues in addition to type 1 which I understand precludes you from doing on online. The other issues are not causing any problems so hopefully it will al go smoothly

Thanks again

It will tell you at the time if it won’t go through online.. but should do unless you have HGV which you don’t as you have a 3 year license

Thanks for your help. I also have to send an updated photograph

It must be. They sent me all the forms in the post

Hi, I have recently renewed mine, although the last one was only three years old, I still had to send off a new photo this time as well. Also, I the letter that came because I had less than 3 months left on my license at the time they said I did not need to send it back. The new one came through quite quickly as well.

Thanks. I do not like the thought of being without my licence.

If it does not come in time all you need do is contact your GP and confirm there is no reason why you shouldn’t drive then you can continue to drive under section 88 without a license

My license only lasts for 12months and I need multiple medicală to renew mine so I’m typically without a license for 3 to 4 months

Thanks for that. That is reassuring. I do worry that I am not going to get my licence. I am glad I do not have go through every year.

Thanks again

My husband has Parkinson’s and was without a licence for about 10 months. He applied for renewal in September as it ran out at end of December but he didn’t get it until the following October!

I believe (please correct me if I am wrong), to be eligible for section 88, you need confirmation from a medical professional that you are deemed safe to drive. I think it used to be the onus for them to say you are NOT eligible to drive but this has changed recently.

States
. If you have a medical condition and
have been told not to drive by a doctor or
healthcare professional,

But it does not explicitly state you have to get doctors consent to continue. However if there is even the slightest concern then it would be wise to ask a gp if they have concerns

We checked with his neurology consultant that he was content for him to drive.
