Type 2 Re: Early Morning BGL's?

Hi Everyone,

First let me ask if you are all doing well, with your daily progress of this condition we all find ourselves comming to terms with? Now for my question, I have been trying to workout what I can and can't eat while I give a LCHF Diet ago. In the beging I made a lot of mistakes but I managed to loose 30 kilos which was good. But now I have this problem with my BGL's in the mornings, I know at present my BGL's are higher than the recomended level, but compared to when I was first told about this condition, I'm okay as they are a third of what they use tobe.

I take my last reading at around 21.00 hrs but nolater than 21:30 hrs at night, which show they are 8:7 to the mid 9's, but in the mornings when I get up and take my BGL's they are in the high 12's, 13's or 14's, so what I wish to ask is if this is at all normal, as I don't eat anything after I have my evening meal, except a cup of coffee just after I take my evening BGL's, so why would my BGL's rise so high durring the night and is there anything I can do to turn these around, please? Any and all responses will be greatfully received as I'm at a loss as to why this happens as most of my other readings durring the day are in the high 7's to the low too medium 9's, with the odd low 10. When I was first told about this condition my BGL's were in the very high teens and twenties, so as you can see they are very different, but I'm slowly gaining some sort of control, I just need to progress with the help of people who have already gained this control, so I await your replies thank you.

Hi and I'm doing well, thanks for asking.

The liver releases extra glucose in the morning before we wake up, and this is normal. If you start the night with a BG of 7-9, then your fasting BG is likely to be several points higher, at least while you are still working to get all your BGs down to safer levels. The size of the "liver dump" while you sleep should reduce over time as your BGs reduce.

Can you give us an idea of what foods you are eating during the day?
 
Is it normal? No I gave myself a rule not to go to bed above 6. My non-diabetic wife goes to bed at her baseline level (mid 4s-5) and that was my aim.

The morning rise is called dawn phenomenon. This happens for someone without D as well but their pancreas releases insulin and the muscles take on the glucose ready for you to get up and go. So what is happening is that your liver is doing its job, the pancreas is releasing some insulin once it sees the glucose rise (delayed due to T2) the cells then don't process the insulin+glucose so the liver releases more and more until your cells take some action. By this point you have high BG levels.

The only way to fix it (without drugs) and you still may not be able to is to reduce the fatty liver you likely have and increase your cells sensitivity to glucose.

There are many discussions on dawn phenomenon on the forum. Please do a search for them. @Brunneria did an experiment with cheese by her bed as soon as she woke up.

Interestingly, since that thread, my DP investigation has extended, and i have now discovered that when i moved to no carbs and no protein, for breakfast, (so that is basically just coffee n cream, or coconut yog) my DP dropped another 0.5mmol ish. I should update the thread, accordingly this evening. :)

Thank you all for your replies to my request for assistance, as they have given me a much better understanding of why my BGL's are high of a morning when I first wake up, as I couldn't workout why they were higher of a morning when I had anything to eat or drink for 7 or 8 hours. So I thank everyone who responded to my request, as I realise you all have better things to do with your day's time, than help me, so again I thank you all and wish you all the best for the future.

I Just want to thank you for the links you placed on your thread, plus I intend to purchase a few of the books you've suggested also, as I need to learn what I can, or can't eat, so as to gain some control over this condition. So thank you for sharring everything with this forum, as I think your suggestions will be most helpful to those who take advantage of them all. Anyway I hope you've gained full control of your condition and I wish you all the best for your future.

Lunch: coffee with 1 level teaspoon of sugar,
Dinner: Tomatoes, Red & Brown Onions, Bacon, Garlic & several spices all fried in a Wok, & boiled Brussel Sprouts, then a coffee & 1 level teaspoon of sugar.

My 21:00 Hrs BGL's were 8:5.

I think your food choices are pretty good except you might want to eat something for lunch, and ensure you have some foods with every meal that include fat and protein. I'm not sure that the teaspoons of sugar are a good idea. There are lots of alternative sweeteners available that won't increase your blood sugars.

Hi CatLadyNZ,

When I first started this diet I tried several artificial sweetners but they all left an awful taste in my throat for a while afterwards, so I cut my sugar intake by half as I use to have 2 heaped teaspoons of sugar, now I just have a level one. My biggest problem is not knowing how to cook unless it's relatively easy stuff. Anyway I just need to practise cooking some out of the ordinary things. I hope your okay and things are good for you and thanks for your help.

why not cut it by half again and then in a wekk by half again etc
