Hi all,
I hope you don't mind me posting in your forum about this, but I really need help as I think I have this condition, yet it seems to be unrecognised by doctors in the UK. For a few years now, I've had issues with my blood sugar level dropping, resulting in shaking hands and feeling weak until I have something to eat. It would normally happen mid-morning but once I'd had a sugary snack, I was fine. However, a few months ago, I assume it dropped so much that not only did I have shaky hands, and felt weak, I starting feeling faint and dizzy and almost passed out. It was really scary at the time. I saw my doctor straight away and he just shrugged it off as nothing. Since then, I have been feeling dizzy and suffering from faintness and vertigo freuqently. My blood sugar lows occur on a regular basis, often within half an hour of having breakfast. I saw another doctor and he got me to have a blood test. My fasting level was normal, despite feeling weak, faint and having shaky hands at the time my blood was taken. My thyroid, test on pancreas, blood count, bone profile etc all came back normal. Her has now referred me to a neurologist, who I won't see until the end of September.
Anyways, I did some online research into my symptons and they seem to relate to a condition to reactive hypoglycemia. I mean, I also crave things like bread and cakes, I have poor circulation and I have a lot of trouble sleeping, all of which also relate to this condition. I bought myself a blood glucose meter and tested myself. My blood sugar levels have never gone below 4.0 mmol but I have noticed rapid drops in my blood sugar level. For example, one morning, I had bran flakes for breakfast. Before breakfast, my level was 4.2. After, it was 7.9 and then an hour later, it had dropped to 4.5. And with that drop, all my symptons appeared - shaky hands, trembling and weak legs, faintness and also tingling in my fingers. Also, when I'm at my best, seems to be after lunch - my blood glucose level was 10.7 for that which I understand to be quite high for a non-diabetic person (lunch was salad, a slice of grainy bread and an apple). It all seems to fit, but I need a professional to understand what's wrong with me!
I have recently started a low-gi diet and cut out potatoes, all cereals bar natural oats and only have stoneground wholemeal bread, limited to a slice a day. I've also cut down on the amount of fruit I eat. I'm finding now, I'm really hungry and have lost 4 pounds in about 2 weeks, but I am still experiencing the dizziness and faintness.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can get help?
Emma
