Evening all, type 2 on 500mg Metformin twice a day.
This afternoon I noticed I was having trouble focussing on the newspaper, so I cleaned my glasses. After persisting for another 10 minutes I thought "maybe its the betes" so I tested myself and had a reading of 2.7 millimols (?). Had an early tea and retested, back to 6.2 after 2 hours.
My question is what went wrong???, more importantly how do i stop it happening again.

How long after a meal was this, and what did you have for the meal?

Anything else unusual, like a lot of exercise or some kind of infection?

Hove you recently lost a lot of weight or increased your overall fitness significantly?

It does sound like you could have had a hypo which is allegedly unusual for a T2 on Metformin - I see you are on a medium dose.

Perhaps you should increase the frequency of your testing for a few days to see what your BG is doing throughout the day.
If your BG levels are generally low then go and see your HCPs.
If they are as expected then treat this (cautiously) as a one off but be extra aware and watch for signs of hypos.
Probably wise to keep a snack handy especially when you are going out anywhere - this time you were reading the paper (presumably at home) and had access to food. Better not to be caught away from all food if you have a hypo.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply LGC,
the reading was at 15:30, I had 2 slices of granary bread with lean ham, tomato, cucumber and lettuce sandwiches at 13:00, followed by a large orange and a raspberry muller light yoghurt (low fat), swilled down with a small cup of black decaf coffee.

Nothing unusual health wise, as for weight loss, since starting on the tablets on April 14 this year i have lost between 2 and 3 pounds each week, even when on holiday in Tenerife for a week !!!!.
Down to 12st 3 lbs (3 stone in total since the start of the year)

I know I have not posted on here before, but it is nice to know that support is at the end of a keyboard.
Many thanks

i've had the odd low reading too.
Don't worry about it
it's not dangerous unless it's still falling, which is unlikely on just metformin.
Of course, if you're feeling absolutely Ok, it could just be a duff reading.

the idea of "4's the floor"
only really matters if you take medicines which push your bg down. Such as insulin or sulphonylureas.
Since metformin doesn't do that, although I'm not absolutely clear what it does do.[other than prevent gluconeogenesis that is]
I don't worry about readings below 4
For me, it just means I'm hungry.
