Hello,
I had a HbA1c in January of 50 mmol and started low carbing after that - my February blood test showed that I'd gone down to 45 so I thought all was going okay. Recently (~last two weeks) my readings have been much higher and I'm a bit confused. Usually my pre-breakfast reading would be somewhere in the 5's, pre-lunch pretty much always 5.8, and pre-dinner about 6.5. Post-meal "spikes" are never higher than 2, usually 1 or less, even after (tentatively) re-introducing a few slow burning carbs like chickpeas, lentils and bread because I'm underweight.
My readings from the last couple of weeks show a totally different picture though - my spikes are still the same, but my "base" readings are much higher - my pre-meal readings are in the 7's, sometimes pushing 8; yesterday's pre-lunch was 8.4!
(9.1 two hours later)
Does anyone have an explanation? Is it something I'm doing wrong, or is it likely some other underlying cause?
About a year ago I was borderline anaemic and had tablets for that, my dr took me off of them because they were pretty ineffective, so I imagine my iron levels have been steadily decreasing since. He suggested malabsorption, but didn't follow it up with anything practical - if my levels have gone down could that be the answer? Or any other deficiencies?
I have an appointment with him in two weeks but I was hoping to be able to try and do something about this myself in the meantime.
