Really annoyed now!

I'm on lantus 24 units evening tim and rapid for meals counting carbs an all that shnizzle!

Over the past 2 weeks I've woken up and bs are 5/6 in the morning- mid morning I test and there 19! I called the nurse and she advise to up the ratio to 1 unit to 5 carbs in the morning And see what my bs does, I've been doing that since Thursday and things haven't really improved ( I didn't eat breakfast today and bs went up to 12 mid morning, had lunch and injected 5 units at 11:30 then ha a apple at 3 to find just after my bs was 17.9!

I don't feel unwell, I've just move house, but quite settled now, my jobs stressful but it seams to be happening at weekends too!

Any ideas would be appreciated! Maybe injection sites are wrong?

To be fair I think I'm even over injecting Insulin for meals and there still shooting!

I'm flummoxed!

Re: Really peed off now!

Hi,

There are 2 things that could be causing this; the most likely is that you are suffering from the 'dawn phenomenon' which means your insulin sensitivity decreases and your liver dumps glucose to wake you up of a morning. This is not really a constant so is a bit difficult to cope with.

This is probably what your nurse was thinking hence the increased short acting.

The other less likely thing is you are rebounding from a night time hypo - to discount that one you would need to set the alarm for 2:00 a.m or thereabouts and test a couple of nights.

Are you eating anything different for breakfast by the way?

I would also say that having used Lantus for many years it seemed to get more and more random in its action; so I swapped to Levemir and changed to split dosages am/pm (which you can't do on Lantus). That really helped and I now no longer get these type of mid morning highs.

Fruit is full of sugar of course; so you may want to think twice about snacking on it.

Best

Dillinger

I came off levimer split doses a month ago, it wasn't working at all in my system, my lantus has been brill though.
It just seams to have happened all of a sudden, never happened before and I've been diagnosed for 13ish years? And can't seam to be doing right for doing wrong,

Breakfast I'm eating either 1 price of toast of belvita biscuits.

Just want to find something I can do to bring them down again

Hi

So that your bg levels are lower mid morning have you thought about using a 1u:4g or even 1u:3g? That will probably work. Failing that, think about splitting the Lantus dose as Dillinger mentioned and then you might be able to use a 1:6 or 1:7.

I also had the same problem as yourself when using Lantus with high bg levels mid morning so I changed my carb ratio to 1:3g but my control was on the tight side. If you are ok with bg testing, use trial and error to find out what will work for you.
