Hi, i am going to be open and honest here... for the last few years i have been in and out of pre diabetic to currently stuck in diabetes, got levels down from 64 to 52..... did get it down to 49 but after steroid injections it went up again

Diabetic nurse wanted me on tablets and i have refused, i have been open and honest with them, i w forget to take them, and i suffer from severe allergic reactions and have hives and one kidney as well as other disabiities. i am riddled with osteoarthritis.

Last year was intensive care with allergic reactions when i had a massive attack nd nearly stopped breathing and was rushed to theatre and intensive care, the same happened at home a couple months ago..

However with all my joints and allergies i have a massive amount of steroids, this is what has taken me into steroid induced diabetes and from last september they wanted to register me as diabetic but i wouldnt let them.. i have enough on my plate without dealing with this.. i cannot get my weight down due to steroids and in two weeks i go into theatre with more injected through my spine..

Because my levels have not gne down my diabetic nurse has again said we need to register you etc and this time i have said ok, i have had a podiatry foot check which was fine and due to go for an eye one.. my eyes are constantly watering 24/7 is this part of it?

i was sent to a diabetic food person, but i dont eat unhealthy, and i eat one or two meals a day maximum my sugars never go low if i dont eat.. which again tells me its steroids, and when they are injected they go a lot higher. i eat a lot of fruit and salads but i hae kidney docs who say dont eat this or that and neurgologist and now diabetes..

i have asked for info on diabetes at clinic and told they do not have any in, i have asked several people and dont think i am getting the help i need to make sure i make those changes.. i have blood tests every three months and in june i have a nother and it will be sky high as i am in theatre having 5 more injections in spine and hips..

if i do not have these injections i will be in excrutiating pain, i was once very acticve but sadly no more.. i just dont know where to start and its starting to get me down any advice would be appreciated..

i have just tested my sugars 9.9 and i have not eaten since tea time yesterday.. my figures are all over the place

Hi and welcome,

Your situation sounds, quite honestly, like you are endlessly stuck between several immoveable objects, and several irresistible forces! You have my sympathy.

Steroid induced diabetes is very unlikely to be something that you will be able to control with diet. Oh, avoiding carbs (potatoes, rice, pasta, bread and cutting out the sweet fruit, etc) will help. But it won't do all the necessary work. Are your numbers high/erratic all the time, or is it worse just after the injections? If so, then you may need to consult with your nurse, doc or specialist to work out different regimes for different phases of the steroid injection cycle.

If you want to keep your numbers down then the medical advice to use drugs or insulin (while the steroids are ongoing) is both inevitable and likely necessary in order to control your blood glucose. Some people experience a return to normal blood glucose once the steroid course is over, but it doesn't look likely that your steroid injections and allergies will disappear like that, so a long term plan sounds like it is pretty necessary.

I really do wish you well with this. Very difficult situation.
