I was diagnosed with type 1 in Jan. I went onto 2 a day injections at first but recently moved onto 4 a day. I started to have hypos regularly even though my insulin dose was really small. My nurse told me to stop my breakfast injection, but I was still having a hypo mid morning, so then she told me to stop my dinner time one too. So now I am only having 1 tea time injection and 1 night time of slow acting. She explained about the honeymoon period to me so I thought it could be that, but she says she is a bit confused herself as to the pattern I am following coz it is not a 'typical' pattern that she usually sees. Has this happened to anyone else, as she is now wondering if I do have type 1 or is this the honeymoon period with avengence. Help, very confused!!!

Hi Rachel, Its still early days for you ! I've been diagnosed for just over a year now and was put on 4 injections from day one. I remember the first few months were similar. I was getting hypo's in the morning and my nurse told me my body was still adjusting, I felt shakey even with normal readings of 5- 5.5, my nurse told me that this was due to my body still being used to the high sugars before diagnosis. I was put on 12 lantus initially but because the hypo's were occuring more frequently in the mornings was told to reduce this to 10 and it helped. As for this honeymoon period - I still get odd things - like the other day my pen failed in work and I couldn't inject after lunch but when I took my bs in the evening they were still relatively low - 6.9!! My nurse also mentioned that its possible that I could still produce some insulin naturally - although obviously not enough.

Good luck with it all:)

Some people can stop their insulin completely during the honeymoon period. So...i unfortunately don't think you were misdiagnosed. It's just that your pancreas' cells wake up for a while before totally stoping the production of insulin.
A cold or and infection can trigger the end of this period so put your scarf and your gloves before going out! Taking care of yourself can delay it for a while but i'm sorry to say it will happen.
That's a cruel process :?
Take care :)

I had some results today of a blood test done a few weeks back which confirms I definately have type 1. I had my lunch time insulin introduced back in yesterday as my bs were 17.0 before tea. Oh well just got to get on with it now and just deal with the different stages as and when it happens. I am only 27 and just hoped that may be they had got it wrong, but they hadn't.
