Help! I was dianosed recently as type 2 diabetic due to family history of diabetes. I had impaired glucose tolerance for around 10 years previously and my fasting blood glucose levels have been and still are pretty constant at around 7.1, occasionally slightly higher but never above 7.5. I have other health conditions which have contributed to the type 2 diagnosis as well. I'm struggling to accept it because my levels are still the same, and all of a sudden I'm craving foods that I would never normally even consider eating!! And my sugar cravings have went off the scale. How do I get back on track as I'm diet controlled. I've read the newly diagnosed info and check the forum regularly, I'm still waiting for the dieticians appointment and feel like I'm in limbo : ((

hi, welcome

what are you feeling in limbo about? struggling to accept the diagnosis is something we all go through, as are cravings, it may be a case of wanting what we cant have :( although i had cravings for them when i could have them lol

anyway ask any questions :) best of luck

edit: i wouldnt hold your breath for the dietician, unless your lucky they are useless and you will find much better advice on diet from people on here that are actually going through it rather than reading the nonsense the nhs recommend

Thanks for your reply Andy,
OK, question 1....how do you beat your massive cravings?
2...does it get easier?
3...where do you get hold of the bg monitors?

thanks

1. i have taught myself to bake and at the weekends i make low carb cakes etc, otherwise during the week i always have no sugar jelly with full fat double cream for afters, yummy

2. yes, you have to find motivation though, that could be just not wanting to go blind or lose your feet, or be around for your kids, i have found running a great motivation, but generally everything gets easier, eating well becomes second nature, now the food im not allowed dosent really bother me as long as i give myself nice alternatives, for example for sunday dinner ill make cauliflower cheesy mash and i prefer it to roast potatoes so its not a problem, bread on the other hand, i dont think ill never not miss that, but theres a new bread called livlife which is low carb and can be had :)

3. ask your diabetic nurse you may be lucky, if not you can buy them online i believe theres one called code free which seem to be the cheapest for strips, the monitor companies can also give them away for free if you write to them but you will still have to buy the strips if the nurse wont put them on a scrip for you

this is depends on your prefered method of control, ive chosen low carb, worth having a read about especially if you have weight to lose

Thanks Andy,
I really appreciate your advice and will take it on board. I adjusted a banana loaf recipe last night and it worked out ok so I'm going to try some other recipes...watch this space : ) Heart disease and stroke risk was what gave me the greatest scare as heart problems run in my family and I have high bp already.
Onwards and upwards Andy : )
