Hi
I have very recently been diagnosed as Type 2.Blood sugars on a meter at time of diagnosis 23.6 actual blood test result 11 but with high ketones.
Have been put on Gliclazide bloods have reduced but are still high and very erratic
I have a very healthy diet and my readings tend to be high in the morning before breakfast anywhere from 12 to 17 and reduce during the day lowest reading being 9
What am I doing wrong?

Hello @RWayne and welcome.

I'm also fairly recently diagnosed (December) and have found this forum invaluable.

Blood sugar levels are often at their highest in the morning. It's great that you have a meter and are testing.

When you say you have a healthy diet, what are you eating? If it's the NHS advised 'eatwell' plate, then it could be that carbohydrates are keeping your levels high. Many of us here have successfully brought down our levels by following a low carb diet.

The main culprits in terms of blood sugar are bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, cereals and of course sugar. How much of these you can eat will depend on each individual. If you use your meter to test immediately before meals and then 2 hours after the first bite, you'll be able to judge - you're aiming for a rise of no more than 2 mmols.

As you're taking Gliclazide, you do need to be careful about going to low and getting a hypo, so I would proceed with caution and discuss with your GP/diabetes nurse.

In the meantime take a look at these links:

A "healthy diet" may be very bad for diabetics. Breakfast cereals, potatoes, rice, bread and pasta should be avoided. Fruit juice is high in sugar as are fruit such as bananas and grapes. Strawberries and blueberries are not too bad.
