Can anyone enlighten me on the effects of red wine on BG levels , I find that a couple of glasses with my evening meal gives a lower reading 2 hours after than if I don,t drink any ,is it all positive or am I missing something, I,ve tried another test at 3hrs and 4hrs after and it,s still lower. Thanks Dave.

Red wine also causes my BG levels to drop. The only time I've had a BG reading below 4 was after I drank a couple of glasses and didn't have anything to eat with them. Nowadays I'll have some cheese and biscuits or an ice cream to try to balance things out. I did ask some time ago whether this was a wise thing to do, but received no replies.

Just by chance my wife has asked me this evening if she can open a bottle of red wine for a recipe she wants to cook in the week (one she got from a diabetic cook book) and I was wondering about this very topic. So thank you, I will drink a glass a night and see what happens to my BG. ;)

The only time I have been in th 5s since starting testing has been after reed wine I usually don't come down below 7 unless exercising an the only to say 6.5 give ir take but after red wine and then other alcohol ( crabbies ginger beer) I came down to 5.5ish. Now wondering if id be better on red wine than metformin? Lol

The only thing that occurs to me is the liver dump. If you have not eaten for a number of hours and your liver is supplying glucose then alcohol will stop it from doing that since the liver will process the alcohol first. This provokes a number of questions.

Does it have to be red?

What is going on if you have the wine with a meal?

I drank a bottle of rose (how do you get the accent?) yesterday and my fasting reading is 5.1 this morning. I may drink another bottle today (no particular reason, I am just a lush).

I only have alcohol at weekends and it's always red wine nowadays, it has zero effect on my bg and don't get any delayed effects the day after, when I drank beer it was a different case and my bg would crash the following morning, to avoid this I'd have a mid-morning snack.
