Hi, I am a new comer to the forum. I am 81 years old and am 5'10" tall. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in November last year when my HbA1c blood test showed a reading of 136 mmol/l. Doctor told me to lose at least a stone, get more exercise and placed me on Meformin tablets, initially four tablets a day. In January I saw doctor again and told her I was having diarrhoea problems with the metformin so was placed on prolonged release metformin and dosage reduced to two tablets a day. Had another HbA1c blood test in March and delighted to learn that the reading had gone down from 136 to 46mmol/l. How had this happened. Since initial diagnoses I managed to get my weight down from 15 stone to 13st 1lb. How? I have been exercising by walking every day gradually increasing the distance to about 4Km a day. I also put myself on a diet aimed at reduced portion size and watching the calorie intake with an initial target of 1600kCal a day now reduced to 1500kCal per day. I use a programme on my computer to monitor each meal. This is not actually following a low Carb diet although by coincidence my Carb intake is below the daily allowance. Since my last blood test I have continues to watch my diet and walk every day and my weight is now down to
12st. 4lb. I have another HbA1c blood test due on 23rd May so am hoping that the reading may well be further reduced. Have also put my name down to go on the XPert Diabetes course the I have been offered from The Diabetes Information and Education Team of my local Health Authority. This is a 2 1/2 hour session per week for six weeks and is due to start in July .
