Hi there everyone!

This is my first post, and just really looking for some advice. Yesterday was my first day as low (lower than usual) carb diet. I usually consume >150 carbs per day, however yesterday brought that down to 80g.

It was going really well, sugars stayed in range all day, even post meal. Things took a turn at around 5PM whilst at work (I usually drop my basal rate down to 80% as the job requires manual labour) My sensitivity to insulin spiked very high, after dinner (25g of carbs) and 1.8U of Humalog, my sugars dropped to 3.1 and an hour later, after feeling quite weak, I tested at 5.4. An hour before bed I was 4.6(but felt lower). Bearing in mind, even after work - 21:00 onward - I still required a temporary basal rate of 60%!

I went to bed at 7.5 to be on the safe side, I wouldn't usually go to bed with a sugar like this, but wanted to take precaution. Just woke now with a sugar of 4.4, which in all honestly is a little lower than I wanted.

Just wanted to know if anyone else experienced similar reactions to low carb? I'm going to suggest it was my body reacting to such a low amount of carbs at dinner, which is usually my most carb dense meal. Would it be an idea to maybe bring the carb intake up to 100g? So my body might not find the difference that drastic. Also how different were peoples basal, ratio, sensitivity factors after going low carb, in comparison to before?

Thank you!

@OllieThomas

If you are reducing your carbs, then you will need to reduce your insulin as the two are interlinked. This is why people on LCHF often take tiny or no amounts of insulin, compared with a high carb lifestyle.

Alas, due to DP, my waking BGs are rarely below 6, but knowing how my own body works, am happy to go to bed with them in the 4's.

Hi @OllieThomas and welcome to the forum :)

I'm unsure if it was your body reacting to the lower amount of carbs yesterday but maybe you should do some basal testing if your sticking with the lower carb diet long-term.
