I'm type 2 and have been since 2004. I was on Rybelsus, metformin ( I Had been on metformin for around 15 years), Lantus and Novo Rapid (my insulin levels were relatively low (10 per day basal and around 10-20 rapid).
I took myself to hospital last week as my ketones had risen to 3.00 (had a cold off a few weeks earlier but seemed ok that week)...kept in overnight they took me off of the Rybelsus and Metformin. When released next day from hospital they said to start the Rybelsus but not to take Metformin but to take Linagliptin instead.

I contacted my local diabetic team the next day and they said that I shouldn't be taking Linaglyptin and Rybelsus at the same time so to stop Linagliptin. I have to control my sugar levels for now using only Rybelsus and Insulin until i can get an appointment to see the diabetic consultant which seems a few weeks away. My basal has now gone up to 17 and my rapid is around 50/60.

Can anyone shed any light on whether or not taking these higher doses of insulin for the next few weeks whilst waiting to get into see the diabetic consultant will have a long term change such that I I wont be able to reduce my insulin again and get back my diabetes being managed mainly through tablets.

Thanks

Taking (higher doses of) insulin doesn't have long term side effects, it will not change the way you will react to oral medication in the future.

However, if your insulin production is low, you may need the insulin long time, there is no medication that can substitute insulin if your pancreas is incapable of producing it.

Have you been tested for different types of diabetes than T2?

Hi , thanks for the information that’s made me feel a bit easier.
With regards to the issue of type , I had a C pep test a couple of years ago as one of the consultants thought I might be type 1 …the results indicated that I was type 2.

Are there any other tests that can be done to help determine if I truly am a type 2?

Can you recommend a good diabetic consultant who does private clinics in the UK. If there is one with good knowledge of ketones as well would be extremely useful for me.

Thanks
