Hi folks,

I have been on Metformin and gliclazide (80mg) for about 7-8 years now since diagnosed as severe diabetic.

The first few years were OK and the numbers usually 5-7. However, as the years went by and especially
the last two years, the numbers often increased to 11 and sometimes 16. I noticed great fatigue, sleepiness
and cognitive fog.

I suspected that I was getting hyperglycemia as I had the symptoms. I asked my dr. to
increase the dose of glyclazide, and there was some suspicion that something else was the problem as the
last month numbers were not that high, and the metformin may have been a problem. I was quite certain that
my gliclazide had become too low. And fortunately my dr. agreed with me and raised by gliclazide 40mg more.

I feel much better now, but
during the past two years I think I may have had some side effects from being too low in insuline. I wonder if
you people have your diabetic drugs increased over the years, and how many years.

Thank you for reading.

Hi Erin,

I am quite the opposite and was diagnosed in April this year. I really want to reduce my Gliclazide as I am sure its way too much as I start to feel a hypo coming on most days at around 11.30 - 12.30 (I breakffast at around 8 most days). I want to come off my Glic but hope that my tests in Sept will confirm my "need" to come off those pills.

Dear magsless,

Yes indeed the sulfonylureas increase the possiblity of hypos, which are worse than hypers. But the dose (which in your case is higher than mine) and the time taken many actually deter the pancreatic ability to have more insulin. I had hypos in the first years much more than as the years went by. And I started at 80mg gluclizide. We many have different variables.

From 80mg to an addition of 40mg glyclazide, after 8 years of diabetes2, I feel so much better, less fatigued
and less likely to sleep after eating. Here is the paradox: the 2 40mg chunks in the first part of the day, and
especially in the morning, the blood sugar numbers tend to be higher than the last 40mg taken before supper.
I have read about Dawn syndrome and something else, but I don't understand it. Could it be that oversnacking before going to bed?
