I am looking for advice about restaurant strategies and going out socially to parties.
I am looking for tips to make sure that when going to a party I can still have fun even if I am checking my blood sugar levels.

If you want to share your stories that would be fantastic. Your private information will stay private.

Thanks

Hi Rob,

Could you tell us what would stop you having fun when going out to eat? I tend to check at home before I go out, and just take my insulin with me, before I start eating go for a quick visit to the gents have my insulin and eat. Providing you have an idea of how much you should be eating it's not really a problem at all. Drinking could be but I've never been drinking so can't help with that, maybe someone who has could...

Advice to a type 1 would be as follows:

Rule 1 in a restaurant is not to inject insulin until the food arrives, if it's a self service restaurant or you know approximately how long it takes for your food to arrive (from past experience) then you could inject ahead but keep some fast-acting glucose to hand just in case there's a delay.

Parties, if it evolves food then getting use to carb counting pays dividends here, work out how many carbs your going to eat by looking at the food and getting an idea of what's available, always better to err on the side of caution when eating out and if your not sure of the carb value then give a reduced dose of insulin, better to correct later when you get home than letting a hypo spoil the night.

Alcohol, you need to be aware that this can reduce your bg so a snack during the evening and before bed may be called for, ask your DSN if your unsure about how your tipple may effect your bg control.

Above all else enjoy yourself, type 1 diabetes doesn't stop you socializing but keeping your insulin, bg meter and glucose in your possession is always recommend.

Husband and I [both diabetic] eat in lunch town about twice a month. He's a T1 and choses something with low carbs and also adjusts his insulin.
I'm Low carb T2 and I have things which are inherently low in carbs. Yesterday at "Bill's" I had cauliflower soup and I checked if they thicken with roux and they only puree the veggies, I followed up with a naked Burger and swapped the chips for an extra salad. Result. No increease in BG.

I avoid carbs. Instead of pudding I have cheese and instead of beer I have wine or a spirit and a mixer.

If you are T2 (diet only) ... don't worry about one meal/party. I don't think that's going to cause long-term damage. Relax and enjoy, then back to normal the next day.

Hi Frankie,

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking if you're meeting friends late or are you worried you are eating a dish you did not prepare yourself. Do you still feeling comfortable going out knowing you have to maintain your blood sugar levels.

Hi Rob,

I see, it's not really a problem, if you are going out you can order a meal which is as close to what you would have as possible. If your blood sugars go a little higher than usual you can always remedy things when you get back home so it's not really a problem, as long as we keep things within reason it's not really an issue. I wouldn't for one go out and stuff myself with chocolate cake as desert without my meter and extra insulin that's for sure!
