Ok folks after my last post "Bad Result" i took your advice and went and asked for a print out of my results , only to be told that there would be a charge for this £10.00 for the initial page then £1.00 each page after that. "shocked!!!!" so asked for them verbally and these are the results I got from my test carried out on the 17th July

HbA1c = 117 mmol/mol =12.9%

Serum Cholesterol
Total 6.4 mmol/L
HDL Level 0.7 mmol/L

Total Cholesterol / HDL 9.3

BG when tested on the 18th July = 25

BG tested at 14.30 slightly over 2 hours after having a chicken and ham salad was 4.4 bit to low for what I would like.

So appointment now booked to find out more as I feel that I'm still in the dark.

Hey, good job - that's a really positive start, good on you :)

This post made me happy... and that's no mean feat considering I've been on hold on a local government phone line for about 20 minutes.

Remember, ask questions whenever you need, take everything with a pinch of salt (especially appropriate for low carbers) and keep that diary going.

You're going to get this whipped into shape in no time :)

Was this at your GP surgery that you would have been charged all that money? Was it a receptionist that told you that? These are around the same prices they charge for full medical records, not test results. Someone got hold of the wrong end of the stick there. They should be free. Full medical records are somewhat different, and they do charge for those.

Moving on, those results aren't good. But you know that and are now doing something about it, so well done for that. :)

The Glimperide may be the cause of the low 4.4. You need to watch this and test regularly after low carb meals. It works by stimulating your pancreas to produce extra insulin and if too much insulin is produced in response to a low carb meal it can cause blood sugars to go too low, so you do need to test regularly, particularly before driving.

Your HDL is very low and this can be caused by too many carbs and not enough omega 3 from certain foods such as oily fish (especially salmon), olive oil, nuts and so forth.

In which bits do you feel in the dark about? Maybe we can help with that.

Good grief, that's daylight robbery! It might be worth mentioning it to your GP at next appt (perhaps as an explanation of why you are only showing him/her handwritten figures instead of the printout). I wouldn't expect GP to know exact cost, but would expect them to have some idea of a ballpark figure. Also check with the Practice Manager what the cost should be for a printout.

Best of luck with the GP appt - I hope you get some reasonable info about what's happening, and an agreed way forward for you.

@Bluetit1802

Here are the question that I will be asking

When I was controlling my BG by diet (which was achieved) I had an annual review now that I'm on medication will there be any change IE 6 monthly or even less

when I had my review (25th July) there was no mention of when i would be seen again to review how the medication was working.

what sort of results are required before I can resume the controlling by diet I know this is possible by all the people who have done this on this forum.

and yes it was a receptionist that quoted me the costs so will be asking for a print out when I see the nurse tomorrow.

You can ask for more frequent reviews whenever you like. You just call up and make an appointment with whoever you see and, when they ask what the appointment is for, say "Diabetes review". They'll call you in for ones according to the practise guidelines, but you can go in as often as you like.

Similarly, you can tell them what you're planning to do and how. Even if they disagree with you, they'll be aware of it and log it in your notes so that it becomes part of your overall care plan moving forward.

Given that you've succeed in control achieved through diet previously, I'd just tell them that you want to give that another go, starting immediately, and that you'd like a check-up in 2 months (or however long you're comfortable with) to talk about medication, overall health and get your numbers logged again - weight, BG, etc. But, for the time being, you're going to give diet control a couple of months and will be in contact if you need anything.

Let the nurse do her thing - all the tests and blood pressure and whatnot, there might be a bit of polite smiling and nodding required - and then get on with your life :)

If you are in England maybe ask for online access to your test results.. they should be available... and if they say they are not then definitely insist on a free printout. So far as I am aware they should be available to you online.
