What is the HAB1C,MY diabetic nurse has never mentioned this,i know it some kind of measure but I don't know what it,does BS stand for blood sugars.I am in the dark over these two thanks.

Hello Pipsy,

Yes BS stands for blood sugars.

The HbA1c is a blood test that very cleverly looks at your blood sugars and averages the levels over the previous 2 to 3 months. It is the test normally used to finally diagnose Type 2, and is also done at intervals after that (3 monthly initially, then 6 monthly and sometimes only annually) to keep an eye on your average levels. If you want to know what yours was, you can ring up and ask. You can also ask for a print out of your test results, which may include cholesterol, liver and kidney functions as well as HbA1c. If you don't know what yours was/is I recommend you find out.

Hi Pipsy

See http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html in the main pages of this website.

It relies on the fact that some blood glucose combines with the blood haemoglobin and stays fixed there. Because blood cells recycle every 2-3 months these levels are also sustained and so the HbA1c test gives you a 2-3 month average blood sugar level evening out all the ups and downs. Some say that it is more affected by the previous 2-3 weeks prior to testing however, so it may not be completely valid, but it is what diagnosis and management of diabetes mainly depends on.
