Hi all, got call from surgery and my fasting BG is 6.9 and A1C is 5.2.
They have said I'm pre diabetic.
I'm wanting to turn things around. Can I prevent diabetes completely or is it just delay?
Joined the gym and started on a very low carb diet.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated

are you sure it was 5.2 and not 52?
52 is diabetic and you get free scripts and good checks

No I'm sure my hba1c was 5.2 and my fasting bloods were 6.9.
They said the a1c is not within the diabetic range but the fasting one is the higher end of pre diabetic

Yes, your A1c is non diabetic and a good one too. I would just take this as a warning because our fasting bloods are very unreliable at the best of times. For a start, when you have fasted your liver dumps glucose in your system to help you get going. Then you have to go out, get to the surgery, and worry about what will happen. This is all stress. Stress raises blood sugar levels. We all react differently to these situations, but it does make fasting tests done at surgeries very unreliable. For these reasons I wouldn't worry too much. Your HbA1c is a better and more reliable indicator, but no harm in lowering the carbs and exercising more as this will also improve your general health.

Thanks. I'm a natutal worrier. The last 3 years have been absolute torture. In April I lost my son after a 3 year cancer battle. Since then I find it hard to function enough to get through the day.
As of now I'm going to try and get a healthy lifestyle

I'm very sorry about your son.

Grief and stress have a double impact on out blood glucose levels - we are naturally less resilient when we feel so bad, and then we usually take less care with diet and exercise - because we feel so bad.

It's a miserable vicious circle.

But if you can break the cycle, even by a little, then you can start spiralling up, rather than down.

Have a read of the forum. The more information you have, the better you will understand why, and how, the changes work. Hope you stick around and post regularly, it's a real motivator. :)

So sorry to hear about your loss.

I hope that time is able to soften your pain and allow you to take better care of yourself.

Stress does not help glycemic control as it causes increases in glucose production and impairs insulin through the release of opposing stress hormones.

Making yourself ill will unfortunately not bring back you son so please try to take care of yourself

So sorry to hear of your loss. Stress has a way of making us neglect ourselves at a time when we probably most need to take care of ourselves. Nothing can undo your loss or ameliorate your pain but becoming more heathy will make the rest of the stuff that life throws at you more bearable. X
