Hi, I am new to this forum biz, so hope this works! I have had type 1 for 20 years. I am in my mid 50's and HBa1C's over the years have not been great. Suffice to say I have had laser treatment in my right eye Jul 2011. I had a bleed at the back of the same eye in March 12, and more laser since then. It all cleared up, I am still being lasered as they are seeing new vessels, but then last Friday another bleed happened! I have been told by the eye clinic it needs to clear and I do have another appt in Oct, so I will wait to see what happens then but I am expecting more laser anyway. What I am trying to fathom is what I can or cannot do?? I was told not to shake my head around, and nothing strenuous. However there is normal housework such as getting washing out of machine - is bending down good for bad. Also to pick up stuff I have dropped on the floor? All those little things, like tying shoe laces, picking up cat bowls etc. Anyone had any advice that is not contradicting itself? Some specialist say carry on as normal, other say don't do anything strenuous. I can't sit around doing nothing and the gardening is taking a bit of a back seat as I can't bend over to weed! Any input much appreciated.

Hello catlover4 We could be twins :) I underwent laser treatment and my Consultant said the same thing. Its an impossible task :problem: Within my work place, Saturday comprises of cleaning till about 3pm. Lots of cleaning, lifting, moving things I am also a carer for my parent, so constanly cleaning, carrying shopping being a bit stressed at times, as I am now as he is inhospital. I was told even sneezing could affect the eye and to rest it and not do anything stressful  Well didn't happen, its been a difficult year so far but that's life. I also do gardening and I am constanly on the go

Good luck and I hope your eye doesn't cause you too many problems, fingers crossed. With best wishes RRB

When my retinopathy was active I too was told not to do any strenuous lifting or exercise.

The following site has a wealth of information with regards to diabetic retinopathy which you may find useful:

Thanks for the input from you both. Am trying ot be careful and not bend down too much (squats are now getting a bit easier!!, so I am hoping as the blood dissipates I can do a bit more, Still don't really have answer from the medical profession that I feel is definitive, but ho hum guess that is life too!!! As it seems anything we do could cause another bleed its best to carry on as normal and not to get too wound up about it. Have a good week.
