Insulin
Just been sent the follow up letter from the hospital. To be honest, serious mental health issues prevents me from understanding the contents in a way that I can comprehend. All I read is that I am going blind which in turn is causing anxiety and panic attacks. Would there be somebody who could decipher this for me in a way that I could understand. Are there any positives ?

I think it's saying you have some signs of damage to your eyes but not bad enough to need treatment. As you have some damage they aren't going to wait for your next yearly screening but send you an appointment for a check-up in 3 months - so they can see if it's getting any worse.

If I'm reading it right, you are far from going blind. The sentence about 'avoiding future sight loss' is a standard warning to all diabetics that uncontrolled blood glucose levels CAN eventually lead to sight loss - it is NOT saying you are definitely going to lose any vision.

You need to speak to your GP or diabetes team though as they can give you a definite answer, this is just what I think and I'm not a medical professional.

Professional or not, I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

IRMA = Intraretinal microvascular abnormalities
Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) is a blockage of one of the veins in the retina at the back of the eye. It can cause macular oedema, which is swelling of the central part of the retina with loss of vision.
M0 : No Exudate within a radius of half a disc diameter of the centre on the fovea
P0 : No Photocoagulation scars
R2 : Preproliferative diabetic retinopathy : Any of the following
Multiple blot haemorrhages of density in any area more severe than NSC standard photo 1
Venous beading
Venous loop or reduplication
IRMA
Cotton wool spots are not diagnostic of R2, but should promote a careful search for other lesions.
IOP: Intraocular pressure (pressure in eye) Normally 15.5 +- 2.5mmHg
OCT of macula : they want to scan for thickening of the macula next time

Looks like there is some retinopathy but not enough to warrant further treatment, however they wnt to keep an eye on it! (Sorry about the pun!)

Thank you for clarifying the contents of the letter. Ignorance can cause such anxiety and I was too reticent to search for facts.

Basically you are being told it's in your hands now, keep your blood sugars down plus your BP.
There is concern as they want to see you in 3 months time. But as yet no treatment needed.
