Just received my results from my first screening.

Can anyone help decipher the result of - R1.2 Moderate background diabetic retinopathy.

How many stages are there in R1?

Thanks Lara

Hi Lara,

This explains the different stages.

Whatever you do, do not try to lower your blood glucose quickly as this may exacerbate the problems you have. I hope you have been offered a follow up appointment with your G.P./Consultant as your eyes need monitoring.
How is your blood pressure? If it is high this will affect your eyes.

This site is very good for explaining retinopathy. Use the search facility for your questions.

Thanks Catherine,

Very appropriate, the first link you sent me is my health board haha. I have a much better understanding of my results now.
The letter says no action is necessary at present, next screening in 12 months.
I was only diagnosed with type 2 at the end of april this year, diet only at present. My blood pressure is high but they are trying to get it down. I'm also losing weight my HbA1c was 9.3 my mmol is averaging at around 7.1 it was 11.2 when I started monitoring my bg. I've just been diagnosed this week with prenicious anaemia and read somewhere on this site that it gives a lower false reading to the HbA1c result. Do you think I have brought my bg down to quick?

Many thanks - Lara

Hi Lara,

Most of us have had diabetes for a while before diagnosis so we cannot really say how long we have had it.
If you have any eye problems go and see someone but as you are steadily dropping your blood sugars and your blood pressure is being treated, things should not progress.
Sorry to hear about the anaemia, this explains why it might affect your HBA1c.

Take care.
