retinopathy

Does anyone know if retinopathy can be improved? All of a sudden I've lost sight in one eye and the other has gone very fuzzy. Rather scared! Got an appt in Friday at hospital but would like some advice. Thanks.

Please explain:
1) You've completely lost sight in your one eye? Has everything gone black or opaque or what? What was your vision like before?
2) The other eye has gone fuzzy? Can you still see things, but not clearly? Does it look like you have a) a fog or mist in your eye, or b) a nebula cloud like a photo from the Hubble telescope?

You've suddenly lost sight in one eye and the other has gone fuzzy and you have an appointment for 5 days time?
Have you seen anyone else as this sounds a bit more urgent.

I agree with Charon...

I too strongly suggest that if this has 'just happened', then really you need to go to an emergency eye clinic to get it looked at straight away.

It's unlikely they can do anything immediately, but the consultant will be able to see what has happened and explain it to you so that you can be aware of what action is needed, etc.

Without knowing more detail, and from personal experience, it sounds as though you've had a large bleed in the eye that is still fuzzy; this may clear on its own or you may need a vitrectomy if the blood doesn't clear sufficiently to laser. I can't speak for the eye where you've completely lost vision, but I hope it's ok.

That aside, there is a great deal of research going into the use of stem cells and other things that help the eye heal itself and resolve the symptoms of retinopathy - personally, I'm hoping for a solution sooner rather than later.

However, the primary thing to do is regain control of your Blood glucose levels and eat a healthy diet and these will help the body to heal itself (to some degree).

Good luck... please let us know what happened as we're all in the same boat and will be here for you.

Best wishes,
Conrad

You don't say if this is a sudden change which has developed over the weekend or something that has been ongoing for some time, if there's been a sudden decline and you've experienced a major hemorrhage of the eye then I'd present yourself to A & E, they will bleep the on-call Ophthalmologist who will examine your eyes and advice further on what to do next.

Retinopathy can be halted or at least slowed down by good bg control, as with everything there's no guarantees, keeping bp and cholesterol levels below normal is said to help too as is a diet rich in fruit & vegetables, if you do start to tighten up your bg control then you should do this slowly over a longer period of time, sudden tightening of bg control can make diabetic retinopathy much worse... but your Ophthalmologist or Endo will explain this to you.

I myself have been clear of any problems for 7-8 years now but still attend the clinic for regular check-ups to monitor my retinopathy, I never get complacent and dread every appointment in case things change.

I wish you luck and hope everything turns out well for you!
