hi
im not sure where my questions fits
but i will ask here

i was recently trying lifestyle changes to control my type 2 diabetes
thus off the 2 insulins and doing well ( i hope) just with a strict diet
but one of the specialists i saw last week wants me to go back on
to have the best control i can get before my coming surgery

so my question is this--
i was on a very strict nearly 0 carb and low protein diet
am i going to have to change that(way of eating) because of now using insulin in order to avoid
any hypos?

Not necessarily, it depends how much you take. But you would need to keep some sugary food around the house just in case of hypos.

You may find you have to eat some carbs at first, as you work out the right dose, but once you've worked that out, you should be ok.

It depends on your insulin regime.
If you are on a basal bolus insulin regime (short acting with meals and long acting once or twice a day), you can match your bolus insulin to what you eat.
There are some people with type 1 diabetes who eat a low carb diet so it is definitely possible.

However, unless you run your BG high, you will need some fast acting carbs (e.g, jelly babies) to treat the occasional hypo.

I have no knowledge/experience of fixed dose insulin so cannot comment.

If you are doing well with control, why is one specialist wanting you back on insulin? He or she give specific reasons? Can you describe your control.... BG numbers etc?

Was the specialist aware of your lifestyle and diet?

I can't imagine you'd need much, but dosing would depend on your levels and closely watching levels when you start. I'm not suggesting you don't do it, but curious as to why specifically you'd need insulin if your control is good.

One thing I would not do with upcoming surgery is to be low protein. We need protein to help us heal and repair.
Is there a reason why you are low protein?

I don’t know anything about insulin but if you have good control without it, I don't understand why you have been advised to take it.
